I agreed to paint a couple of bedrooms for a woman that I like because I wanted the oppotunity to get acquainted with her. She helped out with the project however I did the majority of the work. When everything was complete I ended up charging her what I would have charged anyone else. At first she seemed to be a bit surprised but then she reluctantly wrote the check for the full amount.

How does taking this stance with her affect my chances with her? Should I have given her a break on the price?

did you provide an estimate - verbal or written - prior to rendering services? if you did, it would have been presumptuous of any customer to get a discount w/o negotiating for one.

if you didn't and want to make amends, listen to my plan.... it will get you out of this conumdrum AND give you an opportunity to ask her out!

Step 1: re-establish contact
say you didn't know what where your mind was, but you just figured out you've overcharged her because she had pitched in and ... (say this if it's true AND you're feeling confident)... she was so nice, it didn't seem like work at all.

Step 2: make amends
- if you haven't cashed her check yet, say you've got it and can drop by to return it and pick up another check.

- if she says something like - no, that's ok. tear up the check and i'll mail you the one with the right amount.
-- you say -- please, it's the least i can do for the oversight and i it'll give me a chance to look over the work to make sure i didn't overlook something with that as well.
-- or -- you say -- blah, blah, blah, ...all my i's were dotted and t's got crossed.

...or something like that, ....come on, guy. work with me here.

#3: ASK HER OUT!
if you do steps 1 & 2 well, she'd have to be pretty obtuse or not that in to you to "not get it" and say yes.

good luck!

personally, if it were me, i wouldnt have charged her full price. if you were wanting to get to know her i wouldve asked for a good home cooked meal at her place, or just a movie or something of that caliber. instead of wanting to get to know you better, shes prob. thinking your a hard nose or not interested in her.
