60ghb HD in a 2.5" USB EXTERNEAL BOX, USB 2.0. Disk for windows 98 only. Box claims is a plug and play for 2000/XP but doesn't work when computer booted or plug in USB cable after running. Does not have a jack for power pack. Green light comes on when USB cable plugged in. Is there anything I can do, like drivers? No-name, possiblly Tiwan, model 632T. Message says I have it plugged into the wrong port for a hi speed device. When I say OK, ignores using at a lower speed.

You will need two things and non of them exist if the device manufacturer didn't make one.

First off you need a driver for electronics of the drive casing, that was written for windows 98. Next you need a device specific Mass Storage Driver for windows 98.

If you plug the drive into windows 98 and it says found new hardware on startup with the text 632T in it hten that is for the drive enclosure. Since you didn't get a disk with the External box i am going to assume your manufacturer didn't make a device specific mass storage driver for windows 98 which means you are out of luck unless you can contact the manufacturer and see if they have a good solution.

I only say device specific mass storage driver because microsft never wrote a generic mass storage driver for windows 98. flash drives that work under windows 98, can do so becuase they have a device specific mass storage driver installed onto windows 98.

The mass storage driver is built into windows 2000/XP so your box need no drivers for those operating systems. It is plug and play in the true sense of the word.

upgrade to windows 2000 or XP, windows 98 reaches end of life on 11 July 2006, i.e. no more support from Microsoft, and no more support from device manufacturers.

Hmmm, i'm no longer certain if this trick works on an exterior HDD, besides the undeniable fact that it does now and again artwork for a usb reminiscence stick. Stick it contained in the freezer for a pair hours then attempt it. If this trick does grant you with the outcomes you want, that is going to in person-friendly words artwork for a short even as, the hardchronic will nonetheless be trash, yet a minimum of you will get the information off it in that couple of minutes.
