Many folks get on here and describe some really serious sounding health issues with their pets. Do those of you who have done this end up taking your pet to your veterinarian? I can't help but wonder about some folks!

Boy, I hope they do, but all we can do here is suggest it to them. As one poster said, it seems that a lot of people who come here asking questions like that are young and/or inexperienced and just don't yet know what "serious" is. It's a lesson that has to be learned for young people, because a lot of them get pets because their parents think it will teach them responsibility, when in fact, they should have that *first*. It's really the parents who need to be responsible and take these animals to the vet *before* their kids get so scared that they come here for help. Also, people need to learn that it's okay to call your vet and ask questions. That's what they're there for.

Personally, I call the vet for anything and everything. They'll answer questions over the phone. If they can't tell what's going on, or if they think it may be serious, they say, "Come on in!"

Even when there's a problem that I've encountered before, and I know what to do, I will often call the vet to let them know what is going on, and that I may be coming in later if things get worse. That way, they can refresh my memory if I have forgotten something, too.

I am also appalled by some of the questions posed, but you just have to chalk it up to inexperience. We all learn things, and usually the hard way. I know I still have a lot to learn, and I've had dogs around me my entire life. There's always some new problem or strange behavior popping up that I've never seen before. They keep me on my toes, that's for sure!

I think some people, especially if inexperienced owners, are not too sure what is serious, really bad illness or injury or just want to try to get as much advice as possible before going to and paying a vet. If you have to really worry and fret over paying for health care for an animal, maybe you shouldn't have one. Even routine health care is expensive, and if something goes wrong, which it will, the costs can be overwhelming.

I did... I asked a question about bug spray and I also asked a question about weird red bumps... both times the vet said the same thing as was suggested here! But neither of these problems were really that serious, I do agree that it seems weird some people get on here first in serious sounding situations.

It sounds like a lot of the people asking are kids, which makes me believe that, no, the pets are not taken to a vet.

What scares me more are the parents/friends of kids who describe serious health and emotional issues involving the kids and that they came to Yahoo Answers first...

I wish they would just know to take them to the emergency room or doctor's office.

These owners should invest in pet insurance. I did to offset vet bills. My last was $3400. The most expensive part the hospital stay and x-rays would have been covered if I would have had this insurance.

I haven't asked a question about my pet's health. I would take him straight to the vet if he was having a problem.

I agree 100%. My cat Bo is like my child, if there was something wrong with him, he would be at the vet way before I asked a bunch of people what is wrong. It doesnt make a lot of sense. I wonder about people too! Take care!

All pets should be taken to the vet, the same as all kids need to be taken to the doctor. Pets are family too!
