There are people (all fundamentalist-types I'm sure) who think that masturbation is a sin. Can you explain this in a manner that won't seem absurd or senseless to a logical & secular person?

Leviticus 11:38 But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcass fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.

If you mastebate, it is considered unclean.

Leviticus 15:16 And if any man's seed of copulation go out from him, then he

32 This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled therewith;

Its wrong to do this.

Masturbation is an act of a person that is way too preoccupied with sexual gratification. In the mind of a Christ like person, sex is supposed to be for showing your affection for tour spouse or for the sake of procreation. When it is looked at as an act of pleasure, it becomes too easy for even the most careful of pleasure seekers to slip into a sinful, debaucherous, adulerous, lifestyle that could potentially destryo your life, the lives of your partners, and the lives of any poor bastards you may have in the process.

Now, in this modern age, we think that it os okay to have casual, sexual relationships, and for all intents and purposes, it is..... when the greatest of care is taken. BUT anyone who has observed the nightlife in a big city (OR a small one) can tell you that the dating game is one with fiew grand prizes and no shortage of losers and embarrasing moments.

A lot of people have been corrupted, hurt, or killed because of the Casual Sex philosophy. Sure, like most pleasures, moderation will almost definitely be the precaution that wins the day, but the point that the Bible tries to make is that moderation seems to be out of the grasps of most people, especially after a successful run or two. As always, I won't try to stop you. If that state of mind is what you want, by all means, have at it. But, just remember: a little more conservative idealism never hurt anybody.

Um, excuse me, as for JBW & CWW's answer, how is masturbation a selfish, lustful thing to do? I am a Christian and have read the Bible from cover to cover. It does not once mention anything about masturbation or pleasing oneself in that form (which is strange because every other sexual sin is mentioned in the Bible). Human beings are horny people. We have sexual feelings even before we get married. Instead of having pre-marital sex, some Christians use masturbation as a form of sexual release.

I am going to agree with BobM709, it may be considered a sin because most people think of lustful thoughts while they masturbate. Whether someone is Christian or not, whether someone masturbates or not - it is up to them. It is not our place to judge someone for doing it.

The Biblical justification comes from Genesis 38 where it talks about how spilling one's seed on the ground is wrong. This is a bad interpretation, however, since the guy they're talking about is not masturbating and the reason what he's doing is wrong is not because he's 'spilling seed,' but because he's refusing to allow his brother's family line to continue. Still, they take this and combine it with traditional cultural proscriptions against anything remotely sexual and there you have it, masturbation is a sin.

Masturbation is mentioned in the bible, and while not a sin God would prefer that you not do it. I think the reason is because he has created sex to take care of urges that one may have. I know that every time you get an urge it cant be taken care of, so that is why I don't believe it to be a sin.

Not a Christian, but I believe that they use the story of Onan in the Old Testament to explain this. It was the custom of that time period that when a husband died without children, a brother married his widdow and provided a child to her that was considered to belong to the dead husband. Onan was supposed to perform this task and didn't want the child he produced to be his brothers, so he "spilled his seed on the ground". This seems to me more along the lines of he "pulled out" and not that he masterbated, but God struck him down for wasting his seed. Thus, the belief that any waste of seed is sinful instead of taking into account that it might have been the rebellion that God was punishing.

The reason that they believe this is because it is mentioned directly in the book of Leviticus, I believe. And since fundamentalists tend to take everything in the bible as absolute truth, that means that they believe this as well. It still might seem absurd, but as far as I know that is the reason why.

The Bible does not directly condemn masturbation.

But...lets think about it in terms of a drug...lets say nicotine. The Bible doesn't condemn that one either. BUT...doesn't it cause an addiction?

One would think that by pleasuring one's self you avoid actually fornicating...but in actuality...all it does is create greater mental desires...so you increase the pleasure by doing it more frequently (like a drug)...and eventually...you'll have the overpowering desire to have sex.

Colossians 3:5: "Deaden, therefore, YOUR body members that are upon the earth as respects fornication, uncleanness, sexual appetite, hurtful desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry"

Sexual appetite...that's what the person is harboring...and that will lead to a sin.

The primary reason, is that when most people masturbate it is assumed that you had to think lustful thoughts. Jesus taught that even to think lustfully about a woman is the same as performing the deed (which would be a sin.)

In the Bible it doesn't say masturbation is bad. But it does say to keep away from unclean practices and ideas. When you masturbate what are you doing? You're thinking unclean thoughts and you're misusing your sex organs. These two things alone make it very detestable in God's eyes. If you pray about it God will help you to fight the urge!

Masturbation is actually not mentioned in the Bible. People assume it's a sin because lust and lustful thoughts are a sin, and lustful thoughts usually accompany masturbation.
