Read this before answering - "The U.S. economy is expanding by a long-term average rate of 3.5 percent per year,” according to a February 22, 2005, report in The Globalist. “More than one percentage point of this increase can be attributed to the increase in population through immigration.”

See how stupid people are, can't even contain thier racism by making the clear distinction between "illegal immigrants" and "immigrants" (citizens). So much racism, so much hatred, this will end like slavery did in the south, by having to force ignorant people to be humane.

So-called "illegal immigrants" do pay taxes - The Internal Revenue Service issues “Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers” (ITINs) to allow undocumented workers to pay income taxes. Since 1996, 9.2 million of these numbers have been handed out. According to the Los Angeles Times, last year, 1.2 million people paid taxes using ITINs.

Illegal immigrants make up a huge chunk of the base of the work force, pay taxes (both on their pay and in sales taxes, etc), keep money moving around the system just like anyone who lives here (by buying groceries, gas, clothes, etc), and actually receive less in social services than legal immigrants because they're not able to get many social services without paperwork (despite what certain right-wing lies you might hear).

Illegal immigrants contribute a great deal. Many pay taxes through payroll withholding for benefits they are not entitled to. They cannot collect unemployment, disability, social security or medicare.

They do pay FICA so the government is still getting its share of the money. More illegal immigrants work in jobs that pay taxes than those where they are paid under the table. They cannot collect income tax refunds on the amount of the overpayment so the government keeps that money as well for the general treasury.

Plus lets face it, like it or not they do jobs that others won't. If they didn't do it who would? If the US got serious about stopping illegal immigration and deporting the undocumented workers who are here they would be at the border crossings the next day giving out work visas like they were candy because the US economy would stop.

Immigrants not only add more to this economy than they take out WE built this nation. It's obvious that immigrants contribute to this great economy and it's long-term growth.

It is the "illegal" immigrants, which your question cleverly omits, that suck us dry. Sure 1.2 million may have ITINs and pay some taxes but that is less than 1% of the estimated 20 million plus that don't have ITINs or pay taxes with fake SSNs and are felons for committing identity theft or perhaps they don't file taxes and are felons for tax evasion.

I wonder how much higher the economic expansion would be than 3.5 percent if the "illegals" weren't sucking us dry?

Few people have a real understanding of what you’re asking, let alone a real answer. The United States needs immigration to maintain the vitality of the country including and economic perspective. Such desired immigration doesn’t include undocumented aliens. While all aliens contribute to the economy, undocumented aliens cost more than they generate (several studies document this reality). In addition, it is easy to take advantage undocumented aliens for example by paying them too little.

Several steps must be taken:

First is to seal the border.

Secondly is to establish heavy finds (including jail time) for employers hiring undocumented aliens.

Third is develop a system that helps employers bring into the United States aliens to work here.

Forth, follow the original intent of the law and do not provide citizenship to children born here unless the parents are here legally.

The answer is clear, and also Mexico's economy has expanded because of it. The only ones not benefiting are the taxpayers due to illegal immigration, so if the problem can be solved in a way that all three sides benefit, then we are over the rainbow.

Poor immigrants absolutely do not contribute more than they take out. All of the factors you mention are taken into account in many studies performed on this issue. That is even if they pay ALL applicable taxes for their income group. That is why poor immigrants to Mexico, for example, are not allowed at all, and the number of poor immigrants here is strictly limited.

Middle class and higher immigrants are a net economic benefit, which is why it is easier for them to come under our laws.

Yes, they do. Legal or illegal, they work and pay taxes. The money they make here they also spend here. They buy cars here and buy homes here. All that is money put back into our economy. They are also in my opinion more willing to help the less fortunate, because they understand what it is like to not have anything or have very little, remember that's why they came here in the first place.

That is a good question. Every body is different. Some immigrants pull more then their weight and contribute far more then they take. Some other immigrants just suck up SSI, welfare section 8, food stamps, medicare and medicaid, and do not even have the curtsy to learn English.

Legal immigrants contribute a lot, illegal immigrants do not because they do not pay taxes and they send income back to Mexico.
