Just like any Filipino boxer, Manny Pacquiao started fighting to escape hunger and extreme poverty. In the Philippines, you won't find a boxer who comes from a wealthy or a middle class family. Who would risk getting beat up or even killed in the ring if you can afford to study or have a comfortable 8 to 5 job at an airconditioned office? Filipino boxers just like Manny dream of making it big someday through the only skill they know - fighting. Pacquiao is just one of the very few who made it big. Real big!

His courage to enter boxing comes from extreme poverty, having to drop out from elementary school. Without his background on the mean streets of Mindanao, which is wracked by separatist fighting and kidnapping by anti-government groups and terrorists, he might have not been the boxer he is today.

Here in the Philippines, he's revered as a real-life underdog, who slugged his way out of the country's pervasive poverty and proved that Filipinos can compete and win on the global stage.
