That's hard, especially if you're both gonna be working there afterwards. A lot depends on what kind of relationship you had, but do it on, for example, a Friday, so she has the weekend to think about it before coming back to work Monday (assuming you work M-F... whatever works depending on your weekly schedule). That way, maybe you can minimize the fallout at work. Also, you don't say why you want out, but if youre leaving for someone else, make sure it's someone outside her work social circle. Don't let people at work know that you immediately found someone else, because that will only make it worse.

Well, the most extreme way is to quite the job and relocate.

Barring that, try to communicate openly, honestly...and firmly. No guarantee that will work as it will undoubtedly be akward in the office. Perhaps look for opportunity to transfer into a work situation with the same employer where normal contact in the work venue is very, very limited or occasional.

Hope it works out for you.

the same way you would break up with anyone else. as respectfully and painlessly as possible but feelings are going to be hurt there is no way around that. be prepared for the fall out and the discomfort at work it will be there for a while.

Hopefully this person is a reasonable adult and knew the risks for uncomfortability going in...all I can say is be straight-forward and honest and have a rational discussion.

Ask your manager if you can work in the food prep instead of as the cashier.

Get her fired! (Just kidding, please don't do that). Tell her exactly how you feel. She may be hurt and mad at first but if she is sensible enough she will move on.
