I adopted from the Humane Society for 25 dollars but gave them a 25 dollar donation so 50 dollars in total. Adopting is the only way I will ever go when I get a pet.
There are too many pets that need homes that deserve one but never get one.

I got my purebred collie, Gracie, from a collie rescue. For $200 she was UTD on her shots, spayed, heartworm tested and on preventative. She is a gorgeous, well trained dog and very intelligent. Purebred rescues are a great place to get dogs that are worth every penny and the money that you pay goes to save more dogs. Maybe thats why I foster for collie rescue.
Breeding is not for everyone and most should not do it. You should only breed to improve the breed, and not to make money. There is also alot of expense to breeding dogs the proper way. Never buy a dog from a pet store. These dogs are bred by puppy miller who breed dogs that live in cages all their lives until they are no longer useful and are pts. By buying a dog from a petstore you are promoting puppymilling by giving them a market for their dogs. Get a pet that is already spayed or neutered or if you get a puppy, have it done as soon as they are old enough. There are already too any dogs being pts every day. Don't add to the number!

Avoid the pet stores! They are only good for food and toys! They cannot verify the health of an animal prior to purchase - and most won't accept a return, especially if something is wrong with the animal.
If you're looking for pure breeds go to a known registry like AKC (American Kennel Club) or APR (American Purebred Registry). For all others I would rummage around your local shelter. Many of these animals are in serious need of a home - if they don't get one soon, they get put to sleep, permanently. Visit www.aspca.org to find a shelter near you.

My husband has a Leader Dog (semi-retired now) with an estimated cost of $14K! This includes all boarding & training for both the dog as well as for the human partner to stay for 30 days to learn how to work with the dog. Leader Dogs for the Blind covers all the costs--through donations, of course.
I got my dog at an animal rescue for an adoption fee of $35. She was already spayed at 3 months, which was a bargain for me but I think it stunted her growth; they told me she was a rottweiler mix but she only weighed 50 lbs when fully grown. She was killed on the road in front of our house two months ago tomorrow; she was only 5 years old and I miss her terribly.

I bought mine on election day , he is a Maltese and I knew little about them but my husband who has Alzheimer picked him out. He was on sale because we had a bad week of storms and the pet shop was short on sales.
I got him for 450.00 which I could hardly afford. Now I think that is the best 450.00 I ever spent in my74 years. The love of that little guy is without borders. He loves us all, loves cats, and watches over my husband. I was going to name him Kerry as it was election day, we know what happened the next day, I was not going to call him GWB. Husband decided he was going to be Toto.

I got my favorite dog at the local animal shelter. She was adopted for the cost of her required vaccinations, about $35. She was a Sharpei/Pitbull mix, and she lived out her life with us in our home, barking at passersby, laying in the sun, snoring in the living room while we watched TV, and she died at the age of 12 on April 6th, this year. She made my life very, very complete. I miss her so much I could cry...

I bought an American Bulldog from my cousin who paid for a stud dog to come in and breed. Our puppy was one of 13 and cost us $300. However, we were charged less because we are family! From a breeder for the same pedigree it would have cost upwards of $900.
