Just about any noise the one doing it wants to make...from all that I have heard. There is NO Biblical justification for what is refered to as speaking in tongues, as it is practiced to day, by many sects.
The gift of tongues was given to the Apostles on the first Petacost. It was the ability to speak in all the languages of those gathered in Jerusalem at that time for that High feast day of the jews. That is all there was to it.
If one dose begin to speak in tongues it will be in a known language. If there is no one there to interprt then the one speaking must stop and keep quiet.

In church I have heard people pray and speak in tongues many times. It sounds different each time. What it sounds like is someone speaking in a foreign language. Sometimes it is a language of the spirit not known by humans and sometimes it is a known language.
One woman I know was praying in tongues at a retreat and another woman approached her later and said, "I didn't know you spoke fluent chineese". The woman who was praying had no idea she prayed in chineese but she was blessed by God with the ability to pray in that tongue.
At times someone can speak in a tongue or language and it is interpreted. God sometimes uses another person to deliver a message. At that time he will give them the words to speak even though the speaker may not understand what he or she is saying. Another person can be blessed with the ability to interpret the message and deliver it to the people. It reminds me of what happened with the tongues of fire at pentecost or the many tongues that were given at the tower of babel.
I hope I am explaining this correctly. I'm no expert by any means but that's just what I've expreienced.

Acts 2:1-4
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

There are countless examples. Everyone is different. The best way to know is to go to a church where people speak in tongues. It could be Pentecostal, Assembly of God, other non-denominational churches, etc.

Its just a term for languages, not that jibberish you here from some people, its actual spoken words. From what i think if you know the tongue or language they are speakin you can translate it.
