Ok, I have a gap between my two front teeth and an overbite. The work needed would be extensive and include breaking the roof of my mouth. I have always been sefl-conscious and dont smile with my mouth open. My husband says i look great, but should i get them fixed anyway? With my dental plan, I can afford it, but as an adult, would it be worth having to wear braces?

You can always get clear braces (I know a few adults who have them and you can't tell they have braces unless you really look). It can never hurt to boost your self-esteem, so if you feel it will then go for it! It's nice that your husband loves you just the way you are though!

Sounds to me like you have a few options. Is your deep overbite causing any pain or jaw dysfunction? Because if so, having the surgery and braces can greatly improve your quality of life in addition to your self esteem. Jaw dysfunctions can cause severe headaches and often a dull underlying pain that is tiring and annoying.

Surgery is scary and I would never be too eager to jump to that option, but if it is important and it can help and you can afford it, you should go for it.

A lot of adults have braces these days. Even if you're self conscious about the idea, think about it this way: As it stands, you would spend the rest of your life not smiling in public. What is a sacrifice of about 2 years of braces compared to the way you'll feel afterwards - for the rest of your life!

If you really don't want to go through the surgery and braces, your dentist may be able to fill the space between your teeth with a restorative material. It won't fix your bite, but it could make a lot of improvement in your smile at least :)

It's wonderful that you have such a supportive husband!!!

My wife had the same problem. She had surgery, braces, the whole bit, all in her mid-30's. Her smile is nicer -- I always thought she was and is beautiful anyway -- and now she smiles and laughs with her mouth open and she is not self-conscious about it, certainly not to the extent that she was before the surgery and braces.

Adults wearing braces is much more common now than even 10-20 years ago. I say Go For It!

Look at it this way: If you can afford it, in two years you can have straight teeth, OR you can be two years older with the teeth you now have, always wondering if you should do it. Your decision! :-)

Best of luck!

It would be worth going through the braces if it makes you feel better about yourself. It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks about your teeth it is whether YOU feel good about your teeth and your smile. A great smile can make you feel great and that is worth all it takes to get one.

I know several people who have had braces (and also the kind of major orthodonthia you're referring to) as adults and I think they'd all agree that a smile you're willing to flash at will is worth it in the end.

Wearing braces is not a bad thing, if you think that fixing your teeth would make you feel better , just do it without hesitation . If you just want to please your husbend , then he already is. He would be happy in the two cases but I guess he would be happier with your teeth fixed . so you will

Bottom line is that you want to do it, you can afford it, then why not ?
