I would use vodka because then you are getting mostly the flavor of the fruit which is what you want, rum would also be good, I don't think that wine coolers would be very good, they already have an artifical flavoring that might not work well with the fruit.

Normally it is made with vodka. But I was out once and used Spiced Rum! I'll never go back to vodka. Just the cheap Spiced Rum. I think it was Castillo or something.

Spiced rum works wonders. Unless I'm making sangria (which uses spiced rum and burgundy), I use spiced rum to flavour all my fruit (that is, when I'm making alcoholic fruit). I wouldn't advise using wine coolers, as it will go flat as with any carbonated drink.
