Surely in a head-on crash, a lorry driver would be better off, right? Where's the logic in that?

taxi drivers DO have to wear seatbelts, they just dont do it. you may as well ask why taxi drivers dont stop at red lights, or pull out on you from junctions- they think they have their own road rules, when really they should be following the same rules as everyone else.

Taxi drivers are more open to attack from passengers and wearing a seatbelt could hinder their exit from the vehicle.

Lots of trucks have no padding on the dash, etc and in a wreck, the driver bounces around and is more likely to be thrown out the large windows.

taxi motive force are exempt from those regulations because of the fact on the time they have been put in place many taxi drivers have been attacked by ability of passengers its so that they arent slowed down on leaving the motor vehicle in the event that they are vehicle jacked or robbed
