Oh, please, do a little research! Have you never seen the huge belches of black smoke oozing out of the stack of the trucks and buses out on the roadways!! Those are diesel engines and that is definitely *pollution* with a capital P. UGH! Go hybrid (at 55 mpg for my little Civic, thank you please).

"Diesel engines are used in automobiles, generators, light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles as well as railroad locomotives. When diesel fuel burns in an engine, the resulting exhaust is made up of soot and gases representing thousands of different chemical substances. 90% of the soot consists of <1u diameter particles that can be inhaled and deposited in the lungs. Diesel exhaust contains 20-100 times more particles than gasoline exhaust. These particles carry absorbed cancer causing substances known as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)’s.

The gases in diesel exhaust can also create health problems. The top eight are listed here: nitrous oxide / nitrogen dioxide / formaldehyde / benzene / sulfur dioxide / hydrogen sulfide / carbon dioxide / carbon monoxide"

Doesn't sound too healthy to me.

Diesel actually puts out more pollution in the form of nitrous oxides which cause smog and acid rain. The only benefit is that it can provide better mileage. The ultimate combination is to have a diesel-electric hybrid which reduces emissions of an already fuel-efficient (but more polluting) fuel. Also, some diesel engines can run on vegetable oil and other biofuels, so that can help counter the pollutive effect of traditional diesel.

Yeah why can't we ... it's called Bio-Diesel!!! Ya buy a Diesel vehicle (prefrably cheap LOL) and instead of giving it Diesel or Gas, you just dump Bio-Diesel in it Heheheheee
There is NOTHING special you need to do to
convert a Diesel engine to run off of Bio-Diesel, aint that SO COOL!!! It's almost like a FREEBEE for folks in converting to eco stuff LOL.

When I have the money I want a Diesel Truck, I don't care if it's loud, and during the cold months I'll just put that special stuff in so it can start right ;-)

Corperations still make more money off of Hybrids... that's why.
Greedy b@stards ...

P.S. there is Bio-Diesel pumps ALL over the US now, it's a well kept secret Muhahahaha

There are some diesel cars on the road, and of course all the big trucks are diesel. The last time I was stuck in traffic behind one I saw a lot of visible smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, so I don't think they are zero pollution vehicles.

People can do grease conversions (make their diesel car run on used vegetable oil) for about 1K, but most people don't know about it. I have a friend who does the conversions in PA. I can't find a diesel car I can afford right now, though, which is why I haven't done it.

Because diesel is still a fossil fuel and does not get us free of the big oil industries. We need to get off of fossil fuels and on to a renewable resource. Diesel, at the moment, is acutally as expensive (and in some cases slightly more expensive) than regular unleaded gas.

I believe that Diesel cars are "cleaner burning", not clean burning. They still pollute though. Hybrids also pollute some. Electric cars do not pollute but they electricity that they are charged with does cause some pollution depending on how it was produced. Solar cars cars are clean burning but slow, so not very practical. If an electric company produced it's electricity by hydro power and solar power entirely and you charged your electric car with that electricity, you would be driving a clean car.

diesel engines still produce pollution they are just more efficient on fuel and burn cleaner than gasoline and its additives. hybrids still give off pollution as well since they still use gas. the best option would be a hydrogen fuel cell car. the only by-product is water but for now it seems too inconvenient to produce.
