My teen son has been very sick since yesterday, throwing up, fever, chills, etc. -- went to the doctor - (husband took him). Dr. said it was a viral infection. Where does a "viral infection" come from and how contagious is it?

Ok - just wanted to babysit my granddaughter this weekend but if it is contagious, I won't bring her in. So I guess Viral is and isn't always contagious? I haven't had anyone sick at home for A VERY LONG TIME.....can't remember all the rules.

If you mean that if a relative has an infection, the people that are near are always going to get the disease, not always.

If a person gets sick or not from an infectious agent from another person depends on:

The agent and the methods it has to resist the body's defenses

The recipient's immune system. Probably you have been exposed to the virus too, but your body controlled it better and you didn't get sick

The exposure: for example, washing vs not washing the hands, eating and getting an upset stomach.

Not all infections are contagious it depends if it cam from a virus or bacteria
Sometimes kids get sick and the parents don't because they've built up enough antibodies naturally
Viral infection can usually be spread from person to person with bodily fluids (like if someone coughs on you)
Or just by skin to skin contact
(Like Pink Eye)
Some get spread in the air

Yes and no. A viral infection IS contagious if you do not have an immunity to that virus. Chicken pox is a virus. Once you have the disease, you are most likely (not always) immune thereafter.

Virii can be spread through many media. Cough, contact, water, food, etc.

A normal virus can last 5- 7 days and yes they are usually contagious- practice good handwashing - clorox the vanities, toilets or areas that he has been sick and chage linens frequently ! It never hurts to put a little bleach in the dishwasher with a extra rinse cycle.

No, infections can be of several types: They can be bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic. Several infections are highly contagious whereas other are not at all. It depends on the characteristics of the infectious organism as to wether the infection will be transmissable to other humans.

A virus isn't contagious. It had to run it's course.

If it was a bacterial infection then it would be contagious.
