each Emergen-C packet contains 1000 mg of vitamin c. The recommended dosage listed on the box is 2-4 packets daily. My question is: is 2000-4000mg of Vitamin too much? I seem to recall hearing something about getting Vitamin c poisoning from ingesting too much.

My family doctor said it was ok. I don't know any of the details about it, but it helps me when I feel a cold coming on.

No, I think when you get too much vitamin c, the excess just passes through your digestive system with no positive effect. Other vitamins can cause toxic poisoning though. Always be very careful about taking vitamins, supplements and OTC remedies.

Vitamin C is water soluble...you take it too much, you drink it, you pee it, in a normal healthy person, I don't think the Vitamin C can be toxic, but you are literally peeing away a lot of money.

well you can get like kidney stones, but that is from way more than that amount, and you can get vitamin c from other sources, like fruits that way they are being digested with other foods too.
