junior, the first son. It also makes his father a Sr (senior)

Joe Smith, Sr.
Joe Smith, Jr.
Joe Smith I (the first)
Joe Smith II (the second)

and so on...

Joe Smith, Jr. *is* Junior, and it IS a suffix. Anything after a name is a suffix, be it Jr., IV, or Ph.D.

If it's like J.R. "Bob" Dobbs, then they're initials. (Note that properly written, initials are all capitalized and there's a period after each letter; suffixes may have letters not capitalized.)

Name breakdown:
J.R. are initials.
"Bob" is a nickname. (This is also the format used on ballots.)
Dobbs is a family name or surname.

It means "Junior," which is the equivalent of the "Second" (II) of a name in a family. For instance, a family tree of sons of sons with the same name would go like this:

1st: Cornelius Wilkins, Sr.
2nd:Cornelius Wilkins, Jr.
3rd: Cornelius Wilkins, III
4th: Cornelius Wilkins, IV.

junior (abbreviated jr.) is added when a boy has the same name as his father, so that they can be told apart. III (3) is for the third male of the same name: grandfather (James Jones I), father (James Jones II), son (James Jones III). When grandfather dies, the survivors move up a number.

It is technically nothing at all like a surname!!
