Well im from the old school. When a man was supose to open a door for a lady. When kids spoke when spoken to and waited their turn to speak when adults were talking. When you said mame and sir to your elders and respected them. When the man paid for the date. And he walked on the side nearest the street so as to protect the lady from passing motorists etc.. When women stayed home and raised their children. When guns were used to protect the home and hunt food. When the flag was something to be proud of not burn. Pot was something you cooked in. Kids got a whoopin' instead of a time out when they endangered their lives or someone elses. When the "n" word was the name of a seed and not the color of a man. When your vote meant something. When women were women and men were men and gay meant you were happy! When horse was something you rode to town and not something you shoot up. When if you got fat by bending your elbow too much and you wanted to lose it, you just stopped bending it too much not ran out and had surgery to cut your stomach in half.

I dont go for quick fixes or easy answers as you can probably tell. lol
And I could go on for hours about all the things this county has given up on like Honor, Manners, Respect etc. Its a sad state of affairs.

Just about the only people who still do thse things that Ive met are in the military or clergy. The average joe and jane dont do the right thing anymore. If they do its very rare! It started about the time they took prayer out of school. Along with the 10 commandments! God help us!

But Im still proud to be an American where at least I know my grandkids may have the chance to be free to be whatever they chose. But mabe by the grace of God and a little discipline they will have some of what this country has lost.

God,Respect for others & Self worth!

I have believed for years that popular culture has gone been used to steer public and individual behavior. Rap,
TV "wrestling", mean spirited comedies like "Married With Children", "Family Guy", and the egregious "The Office," which are all about degrading other people and just being nakedly mean. Courtesy is stupidity. Some shopws run counter to this, "The West Wing," but not too many. There is a real push to make positive human values, like courtesy and honor, which concepts come from behavior of nobles in the presence of kings (at court), seem archaic and stupid. Customers (people whom you do business (custom) with) become consumers (someTHING that uses up products). This degrades self esteem en masse, and leads to a populce more easily manipulable, and which will accept lower wages, flouting of laws, the non-enforcement of laws, and a generally lessened quality of life. People want honor and truth, whether they believe they deserve it or not, and still watch "Casablanca" and old Audie Murphy movies to watch these "passe" behaviors in the Behavioral Museum. Some independent souls still display them, but many become confused by their display and don't know or don't believe what they see with their own eyes.

There is proportionately as much honor among us humans today as there was the day the last living dodo bird was clubbed to death in 1681 for the fun of it by a human.
Negativity is played up by the print and voice press because there's more money made by hype.
Who likes to read about American soldiers helping far more Iraqis than they kill?
Maybe you and me, but a heckuva a lot more bleeding hearts pay attention to the negative press and deplore the vile Americans.
The press plays up the attention-getting news about Americans who do bad things.
There are more schools, safe havens, and friendly places for Iraqi civilians in the Near East funded by American soldiers than by Iraq's government.

Sometimes I do with some of the comments I hear, but then there is that 'one'. You know the 'one'. It is that one person that does something, like picking up a dollar bill that has fallen out of someone's hand and handing it to him while standing in line at a grocery store. My husband did something similar just yesterday. After all of these years it still surprised and delighted me.

We went to the bank to cash a check. The teller handed us too much money. I didn't notice because I am really not a money person. I rarely notice how much cash is in front of me. He noticed right away and asked the young man to please double check the amount stating that he felt the total was too much. Yep. He gave us $300 too much. That would have been his to make up for later.

To me, that is honor and being an honorable person.

I think honor is not what it used to be. These days, what our eyes and ears take in through radio, television, and what not is kind of encouraging us to throw honor out the window. I'm not saying that media or video games or what not should be banned or anything, I'm just saying that we all learn by example, and when society accepts that something dishonorable is okay, then it only diminishes the morals we try to teach the children of future generations.

What used to be censored on TV isn't anymore, and it's accepted by society as something that is right. You don't even have to look at any prime time television programs. It's even noticable in today's cartoons.

Honour has always been perilously close to the edge of extinction.Just take a look at what passes for honour in the world nowadays.True honour is seldom recognised or seen on public display, but when its time to stand up and be counted, you would be surprised at how many honourable people there really are.Honour is still alive and well in some hearts.

I don't know which way the Dodo bird went. Even my tracking bloodhound has lost the trail.

Like Tweety says there are some enclaves of honor out there. Its an asset that you have to be taught. Kids are being raised without the close supervision and correction that the boomers had.

Yes, I was taught honor at home and Marine Corp. No mater where I go, I always find the contempt towards others . It's not only contempt . It's a proud and flagrant towards the Laws of man and the laws of god. look at the homosexuals. and their supposed to be holy people that are trying to marry them..
