I am a nurse, and have done it for a number of years. It doesn't make you sick if you have good hand hygiene. Wash your hands after each change, and please make sure the adult in question is cleaned throroughly down below. This prevents sores and breaks in the skin, which can be painful and even life threatening. If you are not used to it, it might make you feel a little queasy, but you get used to it. Think: it's a necessity and that you are privileged to help this person out. Treat that person as you would like to be treated.

It is no worse than changing a baby becasue at that point the adult is like a baby.
It is humbling and it is not for everyone. If you cannot do that without making the adult in diapers feel bad then you should leave it for someone that has empathy for them.

Yes, I am a caregiver to my mother. I may be facing that in the future and when I allow myself to even think about it, I get ill. I don't know what I'll do, so I calm myself by repeating "one day at a time". I pray for strength to do whatever needs doing.

Been a caregiver for 18 years. Sometimes it is not pleasant, however it is necessary. Keep in mind, this someday could be me. Makes your job easier to do, because you want someone wonderful caring for you one day don't you?

It is difficult. The person seems to have more dignity than for example a baby. YOu can't just throw them on a changing table and do it to them. They sort of have to cooperate. It takes a long time to respectfully care for incontinent elderly folks. It doesn't make me ill, i think you can get used to it even if it did. patience is required.

Well, I've never done it, but I hear it takes some getting used to. Wear gloves, stay neat and use tender care for the adult. They are in a difficult situation and are equally embarrassed.

I am a nurse and my advice to you is if you don't enjoy what you do, why do it? It's human nature and everyone will unfortunately go through it someday. I don't know about you but, I believe someday I wouldn't want others to say that about me. Do unto others as you want done to you they always say. I did it before and actually I fell in love with some of the sweetest.

Don't call them diapers..call them briefs!
Yes it is hard, but it never made me ill! It can make you gag, but you can also spray alot of air freshner first, before you start to change them, to help with the odor.
Someday we may be there as well. They need to be treated with dignity and respect.
