In Media Player, go to Tools -> Options. Click on the File Type tab. Press Select All and hit Ok. That should do it.

It's free and much better tham WMP!

However, if you are totally 'hooked' on WMP then find a file (audio / video) that you'd like to listen to or watch and right click on the file ...ok? Then select 'Open With...' and browse to the Programs Folder in your C: drive.

Find the 'Windows Media Player' folder (they are in alphabetcal order by default) and look inside until the file wmplayer.exe is visible.
Select it! (left-click)
There will be a tickbox at bottom left to ask you this: 'Always use the selected program to open this this kind of file: TICK the box!

Play on, dude....

start \ control panel \ add remove programs

find real player (and anything "real" - those guys are lame,) and remove it.

download the latest/greatest version of media player for your OS. XP will run version 11, but that is "beta," so you may want 10. if you aren't on XP, you'll probably want 9.

install the file you downloaded. you will be prompted to correct any conflict with an existing instance of media player. towards the end of the install, you'll be prompted to check the file-types you want to be associated with media player.

if you don't need or want to upgrade your version of media player, you can follow the instructions other people gave you.
