Lately, especially here in California, there has been much controversy over the issue of schools receiving enough money. There have also been many arguments about poverty and disease here in our country. Most Americans fall back on the most common scapegoat, politicians and the government, but I believe Americas lack of money should be blamed on a much more concrete, much larger, much more useless black hole: space exploration.
Many people believe space exploration is the answer to all of Earths problems overpopulation, pollution, etc. It is not that uncommon, just Google pros of space exploration and youll find it. But do you know what is really going into these programs? Tens of billions of dollars! Yes, how miraculous and awe-inspiring was it to see man walk on the moon, to see on the news our rover landing on Mars, but is the money really worth it? What are we trying to find? Answers to all of our problems, problems we created, and problems we need to solve first. Oh yeah, and life! For one thing, theyre looking for single-celled organisms, how will that help us solve the problem of pollution and the greenhouse affect destroying our fragile planet? Moreover, its not Hollywood! Whatever life we find will be microscopic and simple, useless when applied to what the proponents of space exploration say it will help with! There are much larger problems that are much more critical here on Earth that this money could go to. We have much higher priorities we should be dealing with in the present until we have enough money to pay for space exploration with out burying our country in debt, without depriving schools, our environment, the poor, and those riddled with as-of incurable diseases. My grandfather died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and whos to say that he would have lived, at least a little longer and with less suffering, if we didnt waste our money sending a module to bury itself beneath the ice of some distant rock looking for the tiniest signs of life, alive or dead, microscopic or gigantic?
Another problem is, how is space exploration really helping us? One of our main missions on Mars is to look for signs of life forms long since gone. Whether we find these signs or not, what good will it do to help us? There are propositions of creating colonies on other planets, or on the Moon. I find this an absurd idea. Not in the way of the idea being bad, but in this day and time, we do not have either the money or the resources to create these colonies and keep them alive for more than a few days. It is my dearest wish that life go on, that our planet be saved, but how are we supposed to save our planet and its people by starting on the outside? Why not start out by saving our planet from our perspective, first? How can we expect to save our planet from pollution with a colony on the moon if we first dont stop our pollution output? We cannot keep pumping chemicals into our atmosphere and expect them all to disappear! The solutions to our problems need to start on Earth before we can try to solve them from above it. You have to stop the leak in the roof before replacing the carpet, otherwise the carpet will keep getting destroyed. You have to stop building the size of the hole in our Ozone layer before we can begin to fix it. Its like an obese person, you have to fix your food intake problem before you can loose wait. Wasting billions of dollars on space exploration wont help us until we shape-up down here on the ground. The money would be put to much better use on solving the more pressing problems on Earth, such as lack of education, and rampaging diseases.
Also, to understand the real problems with space exploration, lets take a look at the beginning the space race. What was it for but for two world leaders competing for rule over space, for self-glorification? And what were their intentions? They believed that whoever ruled space had the ability to rule the sky, to attack other countries. So, the beginnings of all space exploration came hand-in-hand with lust for power. All the money spent during the space race could have been used so much better, just as our money could be used better now. One must wonder that f this money had not been used on space exploration, a greedy waste of money, if there would be a third world today? Would people be standing around debating about Wal-Mart paying below the poverty line if the money had been used on helping the poor, educating our children, rebuilding the world after World War II? Moreover, did you know that over one billion people around the world are forced to live off of less than a dollar a day? So next time you look up at the sky, you should ask yourself, Is the cost of space adventure unjustified while poverty still exists in this world? Our money should not be spent on trying to achieve greater success, in trying to conquer the sky. How many wars have there been here on Earth, how many have tried conquering the world? I personally shudder to think about the damage that could be done to this Earth if, once space has been conquered by one country or another, the powers of the world decide to take more taxes to fund their desire to rule space? If it cannot help us until we help ourselves, is it really right?
Some may call these ideas simplistic and shortsighted, saying transferring the money will only be a short-term solution. This is completely ludicrous. First off, is a short-term solution better than no solution, when our other option is trying to find fossils of microorganisms on Mars while people are dieing and living in poverty? Did you know that there are people in third world countries who have never even used a toilet, some havent even heard of them! And, factories are pummeling our sky day after day with millions of chemicals, and people are saying that taking the millions and billions of dollars spent on trying to establish colonies on the Moon to fix these problems is a preposterous idea?! The idea of not doing this is preposterous! Spending so much money on something that does not even interest the ordinary man, money which could be pout to much better uses, is selfish and greedy and should not be allowed to continue. Now, I have no problem with orbiting satellites and space stations used for taking pictures of the planet or for sending radio waves back and forth from phone to phone, TV to TV, or even for weather, but if you pose the question, Would you rather spend millions on colonizing Mars or on feeding the hungry and saving the sick? to the average person how do you think they would respond? Do you really expect them to say that this is a bad idea? Yes, colonizing Mars or the Moon may be a necessary proposition in the future, or it may be that we have enough money to do so, but for now, lets leave the space exploration, colonization or planets, and aliens to Hollywood, and spend our money on feeding the poor, educating our children, and saving the sick and cancer-riddled. So please, try to understand that the black hole our money is disappearing into is not just the government, but also the greedy black hole that is space exploration.

Because the budgets of all the worlds space programs wouldn't be a significant addition to all the money that's already being spent on medical research.

Because while we are guaranteed to die as individuals, we might continue as a species for trillions of years to come, but only if we get off this rock.

As the sun ages and fuses up most of it's hydrogen it will reach a point where heavier fusion reactions become dominant, these reactions will cause the sun to swell up and engulf the inner planets.

There is also the more immediate threat of a mass extinction sized asteroid being discovered on a collision course too late for us to do anything about it. getting out there makes it more likely that we'll see and be able to deal with it.

There's the possibility of some totally new super virus wiping out so much of humanity that civilization collapses. Spending more money won't help, new vaccines take years to develop even when well funded.

There are still enough functioning nuclear weapons on this planet to wipe out all living things larger than a rabbit.

Getting more places with civilized people in them isn't a bad thing, but it requires time and a fairly constant investment.

You could not have asked a better question! The best part is that it has been known for years that the shuttle is just about useless other than giving some people a ride into space. Unmanned rockets are a much better way of putting satelites into orbit. To answer your question, though, politics. And BS. People are making their entire living off of the space program. An estimated 40 to 50 million people in this country do not have health insurance but our government takes billions, upon billions, of our money and throws it away on any number of useless programs, NASA being at the top of that list. When and if we ever get a manned mission to Mars what will that prove? And if we can prove that life was once on Mars, who cares? What good will that info be to anyone? Example: Not long ago the United States Senate voted on the transportion bill. The Senator from Alaska put in an amendent to build a bridge at a cost of $250,000,000.00,
a bridge that most everyone knew was not needed. A couple of sentors tried to get it taken out and the Senator from Alaska had a "sissy fit" and threatened to resign from the senate if the money was not earmarked for his bridge. The best part is that he is a republican. This example is why NASA keeps getting the money to continue on. Few people remember that JFK in 1961 wanted to built a Mach 2 jetliner to compete with the Concord. 400 million dollars was spent before the project was ended in about 1969. This was the SST project. This is our government. There are hundreds of useless things our federal government wastes our tax dollars on but as I said, NASA is at the top of that list. Get involved. Call your senators and representatives and ask them why our money is being wasted while our own citizens are dying of diseases and many can not afford to go to the doctor.

It is a good question and a good point to make. However you don't take into consideration that the NASA program over the last 50 or so years has been instrumental in providing many of the medicines, surgeries and style of living that has allowed Americans to live much longer lives. Things like condensed milk, frozen foods, dehydrated foods and hundreds of other inventions were created specifically for the space program. In addition I have to say that we humans can be proud of the fact that we are the one mammal on this planet that is curious enough to explore with the concept that we will not benefit from the exploration but that our Grandchildren and their children, will.

I am a firm supporter of NASA! What everyone needs to stop and think about is that NASA gets there amount of money from the government and other agencies get their amount of money from the government. NASA is no different than anyone else. Since everyone is yelling about curing disease and giving people healthcare in America, stop and think of the medicial advancment we have today because of the research NASA
has done to help the American people!!! Why don't everyone stop and think about how much money the baseball and football players are getting paid for a game and a whole year!!! Take some of that money and help out a little. They don't need that
much to throw and hit a ball around a field!! GET REAL!! I think everyone needs to get off NASA'S back because they are
sending people into space. Why not find out what is out there. It don't matter what kind of money you spend to cure disease
people are still going to pass them on. So everyone just get
off NASA'S BACK!!!!!

What if the information we need to cure some diseases is out there?

Also, research always gives us knowledge. For example, the CAT scan was invented by, and with money from, the space program. I think that alone pays for everything we've spent on space exploration.

We are dying from the moment we are born. T.S. Elliot , wrote something like this: "We shall not cease from exploration, and at the end of our journey we will know the place for the first time." Apparently you are not knowledgeable of all the science knowledge that has come out of the space program. Superior plastics used in medicine and elsewhere, protective suits for firefighters, on and on. Someone else could jump in here.

We have learned tons about our own planet from space exploration. If you have information to pass on to future generations, the benefit is, so you are dead, but they can pick up where you left off. Scientists from the past have given us journals and documented work that helps scientists today move forward and not have to start at the beginning.

there is a lot of use.
so waht if we are going to die atleast people behind us or our next generation will know that there is a whole new world behind us.
if we don't do this then someone else will have to find the mysteries of space now directors are also using information on space to makke movice like the SUPERMAN the RETURN.
if the info wouldn't be here then people won't any such great movies.

Because bird flu and HIV cannot now or, likely, ever be cured, and diabetes and heart disease or mainly lifestyle diseases, and the simple fact of the matter that the things that we learn in space about the body better equip us to treat things like cancer. And, if you think no one is trying to cure/treat those things, you are fu**ing retarted.

The Point of space missions is to continue the flow of money in that dept. some that most of it can get funneled into black opps.
projects that the public have no idea, and even some members
of the Senate and Congress have no idea about.
