Someone mentioned Videora which is a great choice (http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/).

An alternative would be Handbrake (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tivo-mplayer/HandBrake-0.7.0-GUIAndCLI-20060115.zip?use_mirror=kent). There is a great step by step guide filled with screenshots to walk you through the process.
