Because they said "asking", not "taking". Big difference. If they'd said "It's yours for the taking", then it would be easier to think they'd just give you whatever they're talking about. So yes, I think it's some sort of control thing

That is a very good question and observation. It is impolite to ask someone for something that is theirs. So, to ask would put that person in the awkward position of deciding whether they want to part with it.
Only small children ask for items that do not belong to them, because they do not know any better. So, this is a very good example of illogical thinking.

I say, "It's yours for the taking". I've never heard the phrase, "It's yours for the asking." That statement seems to imply that the person had already asked for it or at least inquired about it...whatever "it" may be.

Whenever I bring chips or candy to work, I announce to everyone in general that "I have candy/chips at my desk so if you want some, just let me know". "It's yours for the asking" is pretty much the same thing.

I wish to give something to someone who wants it. Their asking lets me know

This happens to me all the time although i think it is 'taking' and not asking... so i get told, "it's yours for the taking." So i reach out to take it and immediately get smacked on the side of my head...what is that about.

Maybe you don't need it right away, and it is a way of making it known that when it is needed, you have but to ask, and it will be yours. Whatever "IT" may be...

pure and simple they just want to know that you want it as bad as they want to give it to you. so by you asking for it, that allows them to get over the fear of rejection. at least that's what i think.
