I saw a picture of this bed on the Better Homes + Gardens website and the source was "Living Room" magazine. I cannot find anything other than platform beds online- and this bed was a piece of wood flat on the floor and a thick mattress. Any ideas?

No, the ikea beds are platform beds. This bed was not a futon either, it doesn't fold up. It is a regular bed - just laying on a piece of what looks like thick plywood instead of elevated in a frame.

Scandinavian furniture often uses a flat bed- like what you describe. Check out a Scandinavian store and ask a knowledgeable sales person what kinds of mattress' they use. The Scandinavian mattress are not particularly thick- and a bit pricey.
