Try a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Both of these can probably be purchased for under $20K brand new. Much less if used. I have a Toyota truck and Honda car and both are very reliable with good gas milage. I drive a lot (not as much as 106) but I seldom have to worry about my vehicles needing repair or have to worry about how I'm going to pay for gas.

Here is a better idea than the others! You are going to KILL this car with these miles...So...What you want is a car that is going to last a long time get good mileage and not cost too much. The LAST thing you want to do is buy NEW and lose 6000 in depreciation the first 6 months!
My recomendation? Look for a good used car that is only about 3 years old. With average use it should only have about 30,000 miles on it! However, it will only cost about 60% of a new one.
For only about $10,000 you can buy a nice Ford Focus. They look good, last a long time and get very good fuel mileage.
IF you really have your heart set on spending $20,000...Take a look at a '04 or '05 VW Passat with a Diesel. They are VERY comfortable...Look Great...and get about 40mpg on the road! Plus, the Diesel is rated at over 300,000 miles duty!
Anyway, there are alot of good choices out there...But Seriously consider a 'Nearly New' car. You could save BIG MONEY...and still drive a great reliable car!

I love my little honda civic. I've had it since 2002 and it runs great. I'm just going to run it into the ground so that I don't have a car payment. They're less than 20K too, I think, I can't remember how much mine was. That is a long commute though.

Toyotas and Hondas are famous for going 200k + without major issues.
Toyotas are a little less expensive than Hondas so you can get more bang for your buck.
I've had a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Corolla. If it was just for commuting and not hauling around 2 kids I'd go for a Corolla - better gas mileage.

How about a used 1999 Lexus RX 300? Nice and reliable!

Well, that's just abuse for a car, so I would recommend just getting something like a Hyundai, because no matter what you get the depreciation will be brutal with that kind of mileage. You'll get good fuel economy and their quality has increased substantially.
