I have seen many questions on this category stating that Anime is superior to American animation. Then they compare the best examples of Anime to the worst examples of American animation.
They compare anime that is targeted to an adult audience to American animation that is made for children.
The point of this question (It's actually more of a statement) is not to say American animation is better, or worse than Anime. It is only to ask people to use more intelectually honest comparisons.
When you compare Steamboy to Sponge Bob Squarepants, obviously Steamboy is superior. However, when we compare Steamboy to Lion King then you have a much more even comparison.

The fact that the two are so different is kind of my point. I see many questions posted here that compare the two. Usually posted by someone who say something to the effect of "I like anime because it is better than american animation" Then people will agree using examples like Spongebob or the Smurfs for american animation and giving examples like "Ghost in the Shell" for anime.
My point is that is not a fair comparison. I do not belive that is you gave truly fair compairison between the two, you would find they are of equal quality. Anime tends to deal with more violent, adult themes while American animation is typically comedy.
I agree that the two styles of animation are dramatically different and should be judged on thier own merrits. However, if someone insists on making a comparision they should use comperable levels of quality. If you want to use the Smurfs as your example of American animation than use Speed Racer as your example of Anime.
