You usually do it near a big anniverisy (10, 25...) but it has no rules. You could marry May 27 and then 3 years later on October 7th renew them

You can renew your vows any time you wish. It is best if this is part of a bench mark anniversary party, since this is what it is supposed to be. Some will renew their vows as a blessing of the church at any time after a civil wedding. But, great care should be taken when creating the ceremony. This should never be a wedding 'like' event. No, you could renew your vows anytime you want! My husbands grandparents did it on their 25th wedding anniversary AND their 50th and neither of those weddings landed on their original wedding date
