your coffee might be of the wrong grind for your machine or it might be a coffee that has an acidic tone to it. furthermore, brewed coffee that has been left out start turning sour the very minute you brew it, so if you plan to serve coffee for dinner, it's best to make it right before you serve it (ready after dessert) or just after you've served the main course (ready for dessert).
Personally I still prefer espresso machines that let me temper in my own grinds and froth my own milk.

Drip machines are faster than the press pots because with the plunger type you have to boil the water first. I think the coffee tastes better from a press though.
For your drip machine, if it is brand new, try running some hot water through it a few times, you might still be tasting the plastic. If it has been used for a while, run some white vinegar through it to descale.

I like using a Coffee Press. It makes the strongest, smoothest, best-tasting coffee. If you use cold, filtered water and freshly ground beans, it is perfect. The URL below shows exactly how to use a French press or Press pot, as they call it.

French presses are easy to use and make delicious coffee. I got a spare trash can for the grounds though, they're more difficult to deal with when using a french press.

Just a regular old Mr Coffee..its cheap, and makes a good pot. Every month I run a bunch of white vinegar through it, then plain water, and its good to go
