Can you give me some ideas on how to begin or some pointers? I have ideas but would like to hear from someone who's done it.
Its a 5x3 ft solid wood kitchen table hand-me-down that I'd like to personalize a bit.

determine what tile you will use first and check the thickness of it. You will need to install a face around the edge of the table and the top of it will need to be the thickness of the tile plus 1/8" higher than the table top. If you install the tiles with a 1/4" notched trowel, the tile will be flush with the top of the edge molding and will provide a beautiful finished edge and will secure the grout around the edges.

You'll need to put a "lip" on the table top to keep the cement in bounds - you can get something for this from the hardware store that you can nail or glue to the side (or top if you wish) edges of the table. You'll need a lip the same height as your tiles. Then proceed just like you would tile a bathroom floor or counter-top. You'll also want to seal the grout like a counter-top as well.
Home Depot or Lowe's people should be able to help.

All you need to do is sand down the table (make sure there's no stain or it won't stick right) and put down grout all over it and place the tiles wherever you please. Then let it dry and cover it again with grout and with a wet sponge take off the left over grout and let it dry.
