When you bake certain kinds of cakes from scratch, you separate the whites from the yolks. You then beat the egg whites in another bowel until fluffy, then "fold" them into the batter. This is done by taking the spatula underneath the whites gently and scooping them toward the top of the bowl then returning to the bottom and repeating the procedure. You want to keep the air in and not deflate the whites too much. You continue to do this until the whites are incorporated into the batter.

Hey good evening!

Well, Grendles got it, mostly! As a longtime Restaurant Manager, the methodology that Grendle states is the only way that you can do this properly. The egg must be separate, and you whip each individually, and fold in with a spatula so that you don't take the air out of any stage of your ingredients.

But what everyone is missing (and the reason why most of you have never heard of "folding in an egg" (yes, most of heard of folding in whipped egg whites, but not usually a whole egg) is that the show itself was meant to be CAMP regarding Lisa's COOKING ABILITIES, or at least, LACK THERE OF! The joke would be; if you had whipped a batter, and then folded in a whole egg, it would remain at the bottom of the cake, plain for everyone to see, hence, the GAG!

I hope that nobody is trying to do this for real, you'll have a cake that is VERY DENSE at the bottom, or wherever the egg rests.

Good Eating!

James

Dang, do none of you cook? Okay, there were a couple of close ones, but "boiling" an egg to fold it is not even close.
You fold an egg into batter by breaking it open in a dish, and then using a spatula to add into the batter in a few gentle turns. The idea is to have the egg in the batter, but separate from the batter, so it forms striations in the cooked batter (the "cake").
You fold with a spatula. You fold a raw egg INTO a batter or sauce.
In the same genre, the Stooges once ran into trouble trying to "separate two eggs" ... Curley held them apart, then tossed them into the mixing bowl. Separating eggs means to separate the yolks from the whites, which can be done by passing the yolk back and forth between the shell halves over a bowl to catch the white as it runs off.

Folding is a way of mixing -- but gently. To fold in an egg, you prebeat the egg and then add it to the batter with a scooping motion - large up and down circles. If you just mix it in, the cake would fall. This is usually for a sponge type cake.

You must be talking about making egg whites into a thickish consistency. What you do is using a plastic/ruuber spatula
( baking one) have one side of the spatula touching the edge of the bowl inside as you hold the bowl with the left hand . Turn the spatula all the way around the bowl while one is still touching the edge of bowl as if moving egg whites away from the bowl edge, and fold inwards ( flip inwards towards the centre) Keep repeating this method. You do not stir or turn around quickly.

Usually folding an egg refers to folding in the egg white.. This is done by first beating the egg white with clean, oil free, beaters, and then gently stirring it with an over and around cutting motion into the other ingredients.

when you "fold" something be it an egg white or something else, you use a spatula or spoon and turn the product over gently. Folding is used as a term to incorporate one item into another. Usually folding is done gently, as with the egg white, once you whip them and they are airy and light, if you mixed them vigorously then you would "deflate" them, folding allows you to mix them gently and still get the fluffiness that you wanted.

Depends the context:

some recipes call for "folding IN" an egg -- mixing it in slowly as you stir or fold the dough around it

A fried egg could be folded but that's not too likely.

After you whip eggs usually with sugar you fold in flour. You add a little flour then with a spatula you
"fold" in into the egg by make folds in the egg mix as to layer in the flour.

you cook the egg for about 2 minutes and fold in half.
I advise you not to follow Lisa's idea of cooking on Green Acres
