There were wars during he life of Jesus. As for going to war despite Jesus' teaching. You asked non-Christians for their opinion. Why should a non-Christian care what Jesus taught ?

I "faught" a war, kinda, during the Iraq war I was in a "war room", like you would see in movies, advising admirals of war, discussing strikes against the enemy.
I think Christians who go to war against an enemy that wants to kill me are doing the right thing.
If we don't go to war, then there is the risk that we as humans might get whiped out by the other evil humans.
I understand the arguements for never go to war, but some wars are neccessary because the other side is attempting genocide.
Is Iraq a war of choice, sure, that seems to be the conclusion, but world war 2 wasn't, if we didn't evil would have spread accross the globe.
Further, there is evidence from the Bible of God commanding his armies to fight evil.
What is evil - genocidal maniacs.

I could love someone (in the most abstract of ways, as another human being with the full complement of grace and flaws that I have -- the way I think Jesus meant it) and still feel a need to kill them in order to protect my home, my property, or my way of life.
War is horrible and there should be a better answer. It's too bad that a corrupt, monolithic Church got in the way of the teachings of the nicest guy in Jeruselum.

See I can't say that it is wrong because God's people (before the time of Christ) were always fighting wars and killing people... and according to the bible WITH Gods help...ie: there was a story in I believe one of the Kings where there was an Army attacking Gods people and he somehow made them believe they were being attacked and they killed each themselves.
So who's right? Who do they listen to? The Jr or the big man. Until that one is figured out I don't blame them for being confused.

Because enemies WILL CONTINUE TO SHOOT AT YOU! Read your Bible! How many times were people led into war BY THE COMMAND OF GOD? Not all wars are born of worldly attrition. I say God bless all Christian soldiers who will fight for the rights of unlearned, uneducated people who don't even realize that these men's and women's blood is being shed to give them the very freedoms to say all the stupid and negative things they say about war in the first place! Even though I consider myself Christian, I had to say that.

Survival of country and civilization is important. Gandhi did that...he followed Jesus and loved Brits and eventuaally Brits left India..may or may not be because of Non-violent struggle. May they found most profitable to leave anyway...
GAndhi would have miserablly failed against Ladin or Taliban or North Koreans...
The non-violence, Love thy enemy stuff works only when your opponent has a concience -no matter how rudimentary...it would not work against people who gladly kille thier own sisters and daughters for 'honor killing'.

Well, I suppose that the question of whether Christians should even join the armed forces (based on the belief you just stated) comes into question. But considering the fact that so many do, I think it is important to remember that it is not the individual soldier who makes the decision of whether or not to go into combat. Sure, he or she can refuse, but the consequences for that can be awfully high.

If a person go to the war he is not a christian. Why because the bible says thy shall not kill. We should not put ourselves in the position to kill, or be killed. If you're in the war you end up killing innocent people, women and children. If you're a christian you will immitate Jesus.Did he kill no, he teached people to love and to help one another. So a real christian love, and live a proper life, not fighting and killing.

I think that I`m glad they do, Jesus taught to love our enemies, he also taught to fight when you had no other way to defend yourself. Read the story of david and goliath and do a little more studying you`ll see all kinds of stories where christians have had to fight for his name.
