Engagement and wedding rings can come separately or in a set. Take her window shopping at a local mall or downtown area with several jewelers to discover what she likes. Try to find out the type of metal, setting, stone cut, # of carats, etc. that she prefers.
For example, is she a gold or a platinum kind of girl? Does she prefer a small, conservative diamond of good quality set in gold or a ring with several smaller diamonds in a combination setting to provide lots of sparkle? Just get some ideas about her "wish" and "will accept" lists before buying.
Or, you could take her shopping with you after the romantic proposal...she might enjoy spending time with you shopping for a matching set of his and her wedding rings to go with her engagement ring!
Whatever you do, the best advice I can give is to find a jeweler with a good reputation and quality product.

That is a good question. I've been in the jewelry business since 1989 and have seen this handled several ways.
Sometimes, a guy will give a lady a ring with a larger diamond and a larger width as an engagement ring that is a single stand alone ring. Many designers on rings such as this make them as one piece rings - not as part of a set. If you are looking at a ring that has a diamond say in the 1ct or smaller size range, then many designers make these with matching wedding bands.
Hope this helps.

Obviously everyone has provided you similar answers and it really depends on if you want to buy them separatly or as a set. If you've found the ring for her and it comes in a set, buy both...you can usually return rings if they aren't just right.
But here is a little bit of a unique situation. I actually proposed to my boyfriend so I didn't get a ring right away (I got him a gold watch). So when we were looking for rings, I actually found the wedding band I wanted and it was 50% off so I told him that we would be fools not to buy it. So we bought it but I still hadn't gotten my engagement ring (I had picked it out and tried them on together but my fiance wanted to surprise me). So we left the store with his engagement watch and my wedding band!!! Well, I have since got the engagement ring and am so happy!!! Lots of diamonds on both!!
Good luck!

He buys the engagement ring. Alot of times, the engagement ring becomes the wedding ring. We took the engagement ring back to the jewler at a later date and had them add two additional smaller diamonds on the both sides of the original diamond. I think they did something different with the ring itself too to support the additional stones. We picked up the rings (hers and mine) a week or so before the wedding.
My wife felt weird without the ring after she had to give it back to the jeweler to turn it into a wedding ring. She got it back and then some though.

He can buy a set which is both rings together,he would probably save a little money doing it that way...or he can just buy the engagement ring first...but it makes it hard to find a wedding band that matches...

Sometimes they come in a matching set (even a set of 3 rings....engagement and both wedding bands), but the new trend is buying 3 separate rings that aren't exactly the same but sort of match.

A man proposes with an engagement ring, Wedding bands are purchased later as the wedding date approaches,
You may also by them as a set, that includes an engagment ring and a wedding band that go together, so they don't missmatch.
Good lucl

Usually if it's a set and they come together, you buy both. But if you can buy them seperately, you can just buy the engagement ring and get the wedding band later. Or to save time and hassle buy them both at the same time. It's really up to you.

It all depends of some best deals on wedding bands,,,but tradionally first he buys an engagement ring then both of you go window shopping for the wedding rings,,.This will give him a clue on what you REALLY would like and it helps you too. In finding out WHAT HE REALLLY would like...REMEMBER MARRIAGE IS BETWEEN TWO NOT ONE,,,,BEST OF LUCK
