you can turn away and not regret it until you die or he comes back to make his final judgements then you will regret it.

Yes they can. Also it is done for different reasons. Dissolusionment of thier religion, Change of religions, or many other reasons.
I for one have, my reason is very specific. The established Judea-Christian belief system I found to have to many flaws and not enough answers given (either from clergy or the bible (especially the bible which contradicts itself many times over). I turned away when I was about 14. It was caused by an event that took place while I was at church. I spent time searching for answers and it took up until 6+ years ago when I found Wicca and Witchcraft. My questions were answered and I have never been more spiritually happy.
P.S. Christians, I do not worship the devil. He is in YOUR religion not mine. You can keep him.

Yep. People can even turn from one God to another and not regret it - there's an awful lot of gods to turn to and away from.

In the short term, yes, they probably have a lot of fun and feel pretty good about themselves.
In the long-run (eternity), they will regret it.
So the answer is no.

Of course, if they don't believe in God, what is there to regret?

People can turn away from God just as easily as they can tell themselves to "Go away" and then do it. We are all God. Therefore, God is with us all the time.
Repeat: "God and me, me and God are one".
