I work hard for my money, and don't part with it easily. I say to them, it's not my responsibility to support your habits or laziness. Get a job.

Okay, I'm a native NYer, so I have a lot of experience with this. First off, when they ask me for money, I tell them I don't have it to spare. But, them being fellow new yorkers as well, will then tell you about how they just seen you come out of the store and stuff it change back in your pocket. Some will harass you for being a cheap, selfish bastard... Okay, that's when you develop a thick skin and tell them to 'f**k off!' If you even entertain them, they will be all over you.. Just keep it moving and don't look back. That's my way..

It should be noted that Californians take a whole 'nother position to the issue of panhandling (there, it's legal), but that is another question.. ;-)

It depends on the situation. I live in a downtown area where there are a lot of homeless and poor, and sometimes it seems that I can't leave my apartment without someone asking me for some spare change. Most of the time, I'll just politely say no and keep walking. Depending on the situation, I'll occasionally offer to buy some food for them, and you have no idea how well that works on known scam artists!

Of course. I hate it when people on the street ask for "spare change". There is no such thing. I work hard for my money and the things that I have. I'm not giving it up. I have no problem telling someone to "f*** off" or "get a job".
I know what it's like to live on the street. I realize that it sucks. I also remember that it was pretty easy to sit there and ask for change and by the end of the day I'd have about $40 or $50 bucks. On a good day I'd get about $100.

Ha Ha Ha. You've come to one. Me, I sell natural marble tiles for flooring. Show the best ones, and sell the average.see, we stack the good one in front, say about a dozen. Then the white ones at interval of five to twenty, like really stash it up. Show the clients in a flash, like going through a deck of cards. Then just load it fast & count the money & go home. Alls well that ends well. They certainly will appreciate a floor ofmixed marble.Actually that looks really nice.Honest.

I live near Austin, TX. I remember seeing a lady stand on the same street corner with a sign that said she was pregnant and anything would help. She stood there with the same sign for 18 months. (She never changed size) I felt like telling her that if she had realy been pregnant for that long, maybe she should go to the university. Surely they would compensate her in return for studying her medical anomoly.
There are a lot of beggars down here. I used to get lunch for the crew. When I would see a beggar on a a corner that I knew I would pass on my return trip I would purchase a kids meal and hand it to the beggar. One of them actually gave me a dirty look when I did that. I felt like yanking it out of his hand, but I was afraid of his germs!

Scam or not, I treat everyone the same. No, I've never been mean to any of them. If I have nothing for them, I say so, but if I have spare change I'll give it to them if I feel led to do so.

No. But I volunteered once for an organization that feeds the homeless called Food On Foot, and the founder of it said that if you see someone begging for money, give them a loaf of bread, but don't ever give them money. If they won't take the bread, then, they probably make more than you do.

Yes because some of them are too agressive and I am a young woman walking alone. Some of them try and intimadate you into giving money and even try and corner you. I had one guy actually follow me because I wouldn't give him money. I say give to the shelters not the the people. I see most of these guys smoking crack and shooting up outside my apartment building.

When I see a grown ,healthy man ,or woman standing on the corner begging instead of mopping or mowing a lawn like our little pals across the border supposedly so nicely do for us, it makes me want to stand on the street corner with my hard working husband and four small children every 30th of the month with sign that truthfully states, WE NEED MONEY FOR RENT AND FOOD!!!!!
