My mother has been storing my twin size matteress/bed at her house where she smokes. I am moving and want to bring the bed and matress to my new house for my 4 year old but I do not want him to have to smell the smoke. Does anyone have any good ideas or tricks on how to remove that smell?

It has been in the house since I was in High School so maybe around 10 years. I know I might just have to go buy a new one but thought if anyone had any good suggustions first it could save me a few hundred dollars as I have a new baby on the way also.

Do you have a carpet cleaner with a hand held attachment? I would steam clean it with that and then use Febreze.

I'd be afraid it would still cause allergies, but its worth a try.

Try Febreze but if it's been sitting in a smoky house for 10 years I don't know if anything will help. You may just have to get the new bed.

Try sprinkling Baking Soda on it and leave it for a few hours. Then vacuum it up. Or just put it in the sun. The sun has a way of getting rid of smells.

ACTUALLY, if you call your local hospital or nursing home and ask them what they clean their mattresses with, you'll find your answer. I used to work in a group home for disabled people. One of my clients used to wet the bed almost nightly. There is a special product that eliminates ANY odor, but I don't rightly remember the name.

after 10 years, its going to be near impossible. I would just buy a new one.

hm. I wonder if Febreeze would work for that or not. I'm not sure what it is all supposed to do, but it may help.
