It really depends on what part of Michigan you are flying from and what part of Japan you are flying to. Northwest has a huge hub in Detroit and flies non-stop to Tokyo. The price of the ticket will also be based on when you fly. If you fly around Christmas or Lunar New Year, the tickets will be extremely expensive. Springtime may also be expensive because people want to go see the cherry blossoms. Best time is probably around October time-frame since that is usually a non-peak travel time. I would say the cheapest fare on coach flying Northwest Airlines will be around $1,000-$1500, plus or minus a few hundred dollars. However sometimes airlines do have fare sales so you can check the airline websites and have them send you reminders. Or you can go to an Asian travel agency where they buy seats in bulk and can sometimes give you a good deal.

It would depend on where in Michigan you were flying from and where in Japan you wanted to go. If you're looking for cheap air tickets, try some of these sites:

www.expedia.com
www.priceline.com
www.cheapair.com
www.orbitz.com
www.cheaptickets.com
www.travelocity.com
www.hotwire.com

Of all these, cheap air gives you the cheapest tickets. It also helps to buy travel packages - sometimes its a lot cheaper that way. Good luck!
