Go to your local shelter or humane society. See who speaks to your heart. THAT'S the best dog to get.

It definitely depends on your lifestyle or current situation. For instance, if you don't have anything particular in mind, you could go to your local shelter and rescue a dog... Just take the one that seems very happy to see you, but not overly hyper.

For specific breeds, it matters a lot what your life is like. If you jog 5 miles every morning and want a companion, get a greyhound or other dog that can keep up. If you're a couch potato and want someone to sit with you, get a bulldog. If you have small children, make sure you get a dog that can hold up to their play (ie not a tiny dog like a pomeranian or chichuaua) If you live in a small apartment, either get a dog that doesn't need much exercise (like a bulldog again), or a smaller dog that doesn't take up as much space (toy poodle, pomeranian, pug, etc).

Also think what you're willing to do. Newfoundlands are big, strong, loving dogs, but are you willing to clean up their drool all the time? And Pomeranians are adorable (I have one), but are you willing to give them baths, comb them out, and occasionally blow-dry them? It's a lot of work to consider.

Before you get a dog, research. If you go to the shelter, spend some time with the dog. Walk it around, bring a toy to play with it. Ask the employees about that dog. If you pick a certain breed, check it out online (AKC website or others), or go to a pet store and buy a breed-specific book. Also make sure you're getting it from a reputable breeder.

I like the smaller dogs, I've had 2 cocker-poos the first lived 15 years the other 12 both males. Both were my best most unconditional friends. Never been a big fan of the pure bred cause of the genetic/inbreeding problems. I do have a Lhasa Apso now, and I'm happy to say, she's very healthy and energetic.
As with any dog you have to give em love and attention, some more then others so do some homework.

U and only U can make that determination!!

U need to read up on different breeds and their personalities/needs and decide what you can work with. Also once you find the breed or breeds that appeal to you and your lifestyle, check out your local shelters and see if you can find a rescue to fit into your family... a good mix is just as loving/fun as a full breed but if you must do a full breed look for a reputable breeder. Lets put an end to the puppy mills!! They usually are where the pet stores get their puppies.

My breed of choice is the Australian Shepherd but they aren't the breed for the first time pet owner! Unless they have educated themselves about them first.

HAPPY HUNTING!
=)

That depends on you. How much time do you have for the dog? House or apt.? Kids or not? Yard? Indoor or outdoor? Can u afford vet fees, shots, food, emergency care? There is so much to consider. The look & price of the dog should be the last thing you consider.

I've always been partial to mutts. All of my dogs have been mutts and they've all been wonderful dogs with very few health problems. Plus, when you're out walking your dog and someone asks what kind it is, you can make up your very own "breed". A shelter is a great place to find a mutt.

If your looking for a great companion then Labradors are a great dog to get. They love to be played with, and will follow your everywhere. I suggest not to get a small dog cause they can get real yippy. I have 2 labs and they are my favorite dogs.

depends on your lifestyle, activity level, yard size and if you have children or not, some dogs like labs are great with kids but they like to be active and bigger dogs like these and german shepards another great dog need to be taken out regularly for runs or walkd and labs love to swim, if your yard is too small or you are too busy or you like in a cool climate ,have no kids, then there are other breeds for you to consider, like those cool looking akidas do well in cool weather but not with kids or you might prefer the barking rat type of dog, you should provide a little more info to get better answers

one from your pound. Go look at the dogs there. Please, before you buy a dog, go see if there is one at the pound that you like. All my dogs have come from there, and they are the best kids ever seriously. Just go look

Ok....now, I like german shepards, they are good dogs, so are labs, and retrievers. If you like small dogs, beagles are good but a little loud, if you like even smaller than that go for like a toy poodle or pug. They are much smarter than your chiuaua.
