It is important that you are walking confidently but when you encounter an aggressive dog, do not walk directly toward it, as the animal may perceive you as threatening. Avoid making eye contact with the dog, and turn your walk so that you are parallel and not perpendicular to the dog.

If the dog approaches you aggressively still, stand straight and loudly with AUTHORITY tell the dog NO. This may work if the owner controls the dog as such.

If you are walking in an area where you know there are loose or stray dogs, carry some kind of protection such as a stick, a putter, or even pepper spray.

I have actually had this happen when I was walking my 9 lb. Yorkie. First off he wears a harness not a collar. You scoop them up as quickly as possible and try to shield them from the big dog. Mind you, there will be barking going on by both parties, but you have to whisk your dog away from the potential problem. I now look-out for dangers like this in advance and go another way when I see potential danger. I would do anything to protect my dog, even take scratches and being knocked down by the bigger meaner dog.

Carry pepper spray and if the dog gets aggressive, spray it. You have every right to protect your dog (and yourself) and the other dog owner is being negligent for letting their dog run loose.

I have this problem a lot. The best thing I've found is to yell "NO!!!!!" at the big dog. Most of the time it stops them in their tracks!

You'd better hold the little one in your arms, I suppose the big dog will not attack you but it could attack the small dog if he's walking alone.
