I'm an Indonesian married to an American man and I just got my permanent resident visa. Now I want to become a U.S. citizen with my husband's full support. I arrived in the U.S. for the first time with my husband in April 2005. How long would it take for me to gain U.S. citizenship if I applied today? What are the steps involved?

The basic requirement is 3 years if you are married to a US citizen. Here is a list of the complete requirements: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/general.htm

I have a friend from England who lives in the US and was married to an American. She was here seven years before applying for citizenship. She had a permanent resident visa like you. It took her about a year to go through the process. It can take longer than that, but she had an attorney who handled it for her. That's the quickest way to do it.

If you are married to an American just 3 years, if you get divorced before 3 years, you gotta wait 5 years.

If you already have a greencard, then it will be 3 years before you can take the citizenship test.
