a bottle of good whisky should be well appreciated. it is expensive to buy it in japan and it is coveted amongst the male professionals there.

If you are not living in Japan, try giving something representative of your country. Make sure it is appropriately expensive (the more senior the business associate, the more expensive it should be) and attractively wrapped and presented. Presentation is very important. Do not give anything Japanese or anything your associate can purchase easily and affordably in Japan.

find out his interests, and send something along those lines. If that is not possible, I've sent several gift baskets to Japanese business associates over my years as a private secretary.

The Wine idea doesn't sound bad at all but if he doesn't drink then you should purchase something that represents your company or your City, State....Usually when you give a gift to someone especially in your situation they bring it from home....I have tons of items that some employees who've travelled to the States that bring Magnets (Brasil), Small Mugs, Carvings (Thailand) someone even gave me a lipstik case and small jewerly box from Bangkok

it is cripplingly expensive to play golf in Japan...the membership fees mainly.

Go for something that shouts "AMERICAN". Something like our books, movies, music, or beverages should be fine. Or food if you can get it into the country
