Anyhow, if science is too much for the Bible, let's try common sense: Common sense says that the sun illuminates Earth, and that without sunlight darkness will cover the Earth. Is there anything simpler? But the Bible says something else: In Genesis 1:1-31, the Bible explains how the sun is related to day and night. The Bible says that on the first day, God created the light and darkness on Earth. The first evening came and the first morning followed. But God did not create the sun until the fourth day, specifically after three evenings and three mornings. So three evenings and the three mornings occurred on Earth before there was a sun. So according to the Bible, daylight occurs without the sun!

Actually the Bible records scientific knowledge that contradicts all modern science and genetics. While today's scientists have confirmed that animals inherit their colors and stripes from their parents (through DNA), the Bible says something else: In Genesis 30:37-42, the Bible explains how baby goats get their streaked colors: If their parents were mating AND LOOKING at upright rods, then the baby goats will have stripes. While if their parents were mating BUT NOT LOOKING at upright rods, then the baby goats will not have stripes

(2Peter 3:8) But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, AND A THOUSAND YEARS ARE LIKE A DAY. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
First, this verse describes time vs. time (and not time vs. distance). So if this time difference (time dilation) is due to the mass of God's Throne, then the Bible got it wrong: 1 day at God's Throne should measure 2.25 billion years on Earth. Instead the Bible says "With the Lord a day is like a thousand years". Here the bible missed by a whole 2,250,000,000 years! The other part says "AND A THOUSAND YEARS ARE LIKE A DAY", that is, 1000 years by God measures 1 day on Earth; here the Bible got it in reverse! So how small is God's Throne? Even if God's Throne is microscopic, Earth is not massive enough to generate this time

Second, if this verse was referring to time dilation due to God's movement then it got it all wrong as well. Special relativity states that a faster moving object experiences slower time and not the other way round. In this verse in the Bible, it is man who experiences the slower time; hence travels faster than God! Man experiences less time of 1 day (travels fast) and God experiences more time of 1000 years (travels slow). This verse practically says that once God travels faster than man but immediately follows it with a fatal mistake that man travels faster than God.

Wow. You really laid a lot out there! I'll do my best to answer your questions, but I'm simply human and not a Bible scholar. I'd suggest that you maybe take these questions to a pastor and see what he has to say.

Gen 1:3-5 I can't explain what kind of light that this was, but you're right that it wasn't from the sun since the sun wasn't created until the fourth day. However, is it possible to have light without the sun? Think about it. Also, this is God we're talking about. He is without limits.

Gen 30:37-42 I'm not sure which version of the Bible that you are using, but I don't think you understood this story correctly. According to what my Bible says (it's KJV which I know is not the easiest to read out there, but I grew up with it) that Jacob placed these stripped rods in the water that the goats drank from. Why? Well here's what my notes say for vss 37-42, " Jacob placed partially stripped branches from certain trees in the watering troughs to stimulate animal reproductive activity. Jacob, an experienced Shepperd, also practiced selective breeding (vss 40-42). Yet he attributed his prosperity to the intervention of God (31: 7,9)." Sounds kind of scientific to me, using selective breeding that is. That is what he did when he separated the goats and then bred the strong ones together and sorted off the weaker ones (vss 40-42).

2 Peter 3:8-9 I think you're coming at this verse from the wrong angle. You want to pick it apart scientifically, but this is not a scientific statement. The point Peter is trying to make here is how patient God is, that He wants all to come into a relationship with Him, which is what verse 9 points out. The remark Peter makes about time with God is that He views it differently than us. Days do not matter. Chew on this; God created time and He exists outside of it.

You ask how I can believe in a God that got it all wrong? Well I don't believe He did. Perhaps you should get into some Bible studies or read the texts in their entirety so that you can understand scripture better. Also, ask God for help. He's willing and waiting for you.

The problem with your conclusion is that you are trying to compare the finite world of today with a divine universe that was undergoing creation. God created light, it never said the light came from the sun. You seem to miss the part that the world was not the world as it is today. God separated the waters from the waters with firmament of heaven (firmament is defined as: open space or open air). The waters below were gathered together to expose dry land. The waters above remained. hmmm.. How does the sun shine through that? God put lights in the firmament to cast light upon the earth. He didn't make stars until after he made the sun and moon.

Your attempt at "common sense" doesn't work well when dealing with the divine. Common sense says you can't breathe life into clay. Oops...he did that too. Think of it as an ant trying to comprehend the world of humans. Common sense says that everyone lives in a hole in the ground, builds mounds, works for the queen, and doesn't get paid. Hmmm... understanding is all about perspective. So are beliefs.

It is so funny when someone that does not understand the bible, tries to read it literally. Keep it up, and you will move further away from the truth. Use your head instead of believing that the bible tells each individual thing that happened literally. Do you not understand metaphors, or what? I am not sure what the big deal about the bible is to nonbelievers, it is a book. God is not as little as the book you try to put God in. Christianity and God are much much bigger than A single book. Just because you can win a debate with bible thumpers with these things, i would not start patting yourself on the back just yet.

Hey, If you look in the Bible it says God is Light. He could have been the light before he created the sun. Also, since he is God, he could have made a temporary light until he made the sun. Secondly, Science is not too much for the Bible. The Bible has lots of science in it. For example, Leviticus 17:11. The life of the flesh is in the blood. Or the verse that says the earth is hung upon nothing. Or the water cycle, or the way of the waters. etc. Look it up ;-)

Wow. SOMEone's really scratching at the walls, REALLY trying to disprove the Bible. Is God so limited that He, the creator of all things, cannot create just pure light? Or is He limited to the "logic" of man? And do you honestly think that the rods are what made the lambs streaked? Speckled lambs existed LONG before this, THIS event was simply God working out good things for His servant Jacob. And seriously, can you not see the passage in 2 Peter is trying to convey the fact that God lives in eternity, and in eternity there is no past, present, or future. It just is. And if it was meant to be taken literally, it simply means what a thousand years seems like to God! And God's throne has ne measurable size, just as God Himself has no measurable size!

Obviously, when God first said "let there be light", He was not referring to the sun.
Obviously, God was not working with terran dirunal periods, which vary even at different points on the planet.
Obviously, the Bible was never meant to be a technical manual on how to create a universe.
Please don't assume that all Christians are lacking in intelligence, even though a great many do seem to be. It is possible to be a Christian without fearing science. (After all, God invented science)
:)

The bible was written by men, not by God, but there is no point in using logic to deal with the deeply religious. It makes me wonder if people 2000 years from now will be worshiping the gospel of Harry Potter.

A lot of things from the Bible are not to be taken literally, but are used as metaphors. Science and the Bible are not to used as a check and balance system for the world or life. You can take a little bit from each or more from one of the other.

Before the sun was created, there was a giant light bulb in the sky. But once God realized how much the animals would be bothered by his clap-ons and clap-offs, he came up with idea for the sun.
