Single mom of 2 kids and helping 2 kids in home. Looking to go back to school. Would love to know if there's financial assistance that will help pay for costs other than tuition and books? Any and all information would be helpful.

Your first step should be to fill out a FAFSA. It's a government form that takes forever to fill out. Once you submit it, the government determines your level of need, and reports that to the college you're thinking of attending. Then you can talk to your financial aid office at the college, and they'll work with you to help you find a way to pay for everything.
Then there are always private scholarships that are usually just companies or philanthropists giving away money. The money is usually given away in essay contests.
Also, good luck! My mom was a single mom, and I watched her struggle through school, one class at a time while I was growing up. She just graduated a couple of years ago. I hope you get to go. :]

Yes there are. Suggest you go to the financial aid office of any local community college or university. You can also do an on-line search try searching for federal financial aid.

Ask the school you're interested in attending if there are any private scholarships available. Even at community colleges, there are more than a few tailored specifically to unconventional students- older students, single parents, etc. They should be able to help you. After all, they want you to be able to afford to attend, too! Good luck.

I too recommend fafsa - you will probably be eligible to grants and student loans. I applied for a student loan one year that I was a guardian for my niece and received enough money for tuition, books and help with living costs.
