I want to skip the traditional movie, dinner, minigolf dates...what do guys really want to do on a date?

Melissa, what does your man really like to do in his free time, besides dating you? I mean think of things he talks about and does as a hobby? I know that in one birthday it was cool as hell when my lady, at the time, surprised me by gathering my buddies and family in her apartment Club House for a surprise party. She pulled off the whole thing famiously. Called all the people, organized who was brining what, organized the decorations and kept me in the dark for 3 months. I mean that kicks ***.
On another front, I know that if you man likes doing a particular sport of hobby you could take part in it with him. I would love for my now wife to get on the back of my Honda crusier and ride with me. She has an honest fear of being on motorcycles so I can understand why she does not. However, the point being is there something that your man does which you could share which possibly you have not at this point? In either case it may just mean the world to him!

It seems that most men do not really like surprises. You may be making all these great plans to set yourself up for a fall when is is not as excited as you want him to be. Maybe you should ask him what he would like to do if you were to surprise him. You will come out ahead. He will either give you suggestions, or you will be able to tell that he is not to enthused with surprises...

Take him to the lake. Rent a boat, jet ski, whatever. Just rock the water.

Travel.. Take him to a place he very been. Book into a hotel and enjoy the out side world. Take him to a place where no one know you to same where small....

Pool, Club, any where with his friends. Then you can see the real side of him. Ask him what he really likes to do.

Go skydiving, or hiking, or anything that he would love to do, but never has the chance to.
