The saving that he spoke of was not in this lifetime. I think he said he would save all believers from evil, and chances are that most slaves weren't Christians until they got to the new world and were forcefully converted.

life happens. not everything can be good. if it were, then there would be no need for anything, especially God. without suffering there can be no compassion....
not only slaves have suffered. every race and religion has gone through persecution and some kind of suffering.
