...people have the tendency to act all "know-it-all" and make you feel stupid when you ask a question you don't know the answer to? Everyone knows something others don't - so what's the point of putting someone down just because they don't know something you do? It's friggin' annoying!

Like for example, if you ask "What's the capital of China" and they act all obnoxious and go "How can you NOT know the capital of China!?? What are you, stupid?"

Like, wtf? How can you determine what makes a question a "stupid question."

Grr.

I don't know the capital of china myself...lol. It's a sad story. I think people do that because it makes them feel more powerful like if they know more than you they have more power and by putting you down it proves the power to them....People are just plain silly these days....can't pay attention to that non sense....bet if you asked a question they couldn't answer they wouldn't do that.

Sweetie, it's called a "power trip". It's one of the ways in which they make themselves feel superior to others, by putting the other person down. They may not even know the capital of China themselves (but they wouldn't let you know that). It generally is a mark of low self-esteem. It often comes from being put down themselves many times by a domineering verbally abusive authority figure, i.e. parent. It becomes so ingrained in their psyche that it is their comfort zone and so even when away from it, they self-perpetuate it--often with out realizing they act just like the person they probably hate the most. The best thing you can do is not take it personally and pray that the person will one day find a good counselor to help them.

I don't think that there is anything as a stupid question just stupid answers. And i agree with you, people shouldn't make you feel stupid for asking a question. If you don't ask questions then how does anyone expect you to learn. We don't learn in school by not asking questions!

Ask them a question back. For example ask them well what is the population of Beijing and what is the median age. Then act surprised. When they don't know. If they tell you no one knows the answer to that look it up on the internet and prove to them that someone else does know. Or you can call them an ***hole.

The only time I get annoyed with "stupid questions" is when they are written in "modern/stupid-ese" (the language of stupid). Like this-"wut iz da ting dat dos dis?" That's when I figure it's a stupid question.
Other than that I try to be kind.

If they respond without answering your question then they are just hiding the fact that they don't know either. If they do give you the answer then they are just trying to hide there low self esteem by putting others down.
The proper response to them either way would be : I just needed to know the answer to my question not a demonstration of rudeness!

Just remember- There are no stupid questions. and the whole- what you don't know the answer to that, thing- that's just a way of hiding the fact that they don't know it either.

My brother does that all the time. It's just because his pride makes him think that he is better than everyone else, but at the same time he has nagging doubts, so he has to prove he is better by correcting everyone and criticizing everything.
