I ask this question respectfully, in both the Old and the New Testement there is discussion about slavery being a legal institution. Therefor God thinks that this is something moral and ethical.
I understand what has been said here about how it was "humane" and it was people who owed a debt, but we in the last 150 years have as a trend as man gotten away from slavery. Have we replaced our own morality in place of Gods?
Has there been any ramification to the planet Earth since we got away from that - the morality of God - of slavery?

The Bible is true and anyone who says it's fiction needs to shut up. And slavery sucks black people have been slaves since 1600 and still we are not treated like fair. Some white people treat us blacks great but most are racists, rednecks, or hillbilles. Now slavery isn't great at all. When blacks were slaves the white people depended on them because they did all the work well they did everything. Now why don't people get a maid or a waiter they aren't slaves and they can quit at anytime.

Slavery is amoral. It is a form of employment. Many have abused it in history. Many have not. My ancestors were slaves. Yes- white European slaves. Nearly three-fourths of the white European settlers were slaves or servants. We must not apply what we learned from "Roots" and other stories about slavery of Africans in the United States to all of history. Many scholars believe that Luke was a slave to Paul. I don't know. But slavery has been throughout history a way for people to have security. Many slaves had no choice in the matter-that was bad. But why would others chose it? Slavery was very bad for some no doubt, but it was life for others. We still have slavery today in the USA. How many people do you know today that can not quit their seemingly worthless job because they are in too much debt. People put in terrible hours for poor wages and no benefits. Just look at Wal-Mart. And most other companies.
Excuse me-i have rambled. But to answer you question-No we are not better off, we have more freedom today-but most people are unhappy. We may have dropped slavery, but we have also dropped God.

Yes, slavery is moral, as long as this slavery is, as it used to be, in return for a debt or crime. We replaced that in more recent history, making people slaves for our own personal gains. Don't forget that the bible also says:
Ephesians 6:9
"And, masters, do the same things [respecting, honoring, serving God towrds] to them [slaves], and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him [he treats all men the same]."

Of course interpretation is subjective at best, but I think that the master is God. If we are to be good Christians be are to be obedient to God's will.Personally I don't consider that slavery but you have to consider the times the world was in when those scriptures were written. Peace

do be do be dooo...here we go: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." ( Having servants in those days was common. It was a job for the poor. The Bible was written during this time. He is saying to respect your employer basically) "since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (respecting others and doing a job well is pleasing to Him) "Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism."

Sounds like you answered your own question--it was servitutde to repay a debt, and they were never to be treated badly (in fact, they were to be feed either upon the payment of their debt of the seventh year). Also, because something is acceptable doesn't mean that it is now required. ie, just because you can do something doesn't mean you have to or that you even should. Finally, we're not Israel. We're not a theocracy like they were at that time. Besides, your premise that slavery is somehow the same is skewed.

You mean you didn't know God was really pissed when the 13th amendment was passed? That's why He had Lincoln whacked. That is also why we have had so many hurricanes, and the tsunami. I say we bring back slavery in the form of clones. You could have your clone go to work for you, take out the trash, do your taxes, and even spend quality time with the in-laws. Now that sounds like a god-like plan to me.

Slavery as defined in the Bible--serving to repay a debt, or serving out of dedication to a master--is moral. Slavery as defined by the history of the American Continent--kidnapping of innocent, blameless people and selling them against their will--is amoral.

The world is constantly evolving. Slavery has been reduced to a very low level compared to its world-wide acceptance a few hundred years ago. So you have it backwards...your facts are correct, but your conclusion is wrong. Mans morality is being up-graded to Gods way of thinking.

We haven't got away from slavery. We just don't realize we are slaves just because the master gives you a little money and tells you you can now buy your food from him instead of him giving it to you.
