My ex-husband recently purchased a CJ-7 (jeep
), our children are still in car seats. Should I tell him I don't want the kids riding in his jeep? He removes the roof and there are my 3 and 5 year olds "open" to the breeze!! I picture an accident and my kids injured badly!! What should I do???

It is natural for you to be protective of your children and a woman's maternal instincts will override anything you read here so everything must be taken into perspective.

First, you will drive yourself nuts protecting your children from "what ifs" and they will grow to resent you for it. Of course they are only toddlers at the moment but don't get off on the wrong foot.

Even the best protection or the most strict avoidance will not dismiss the potential for a freak accident that could injure your kids badly. The best you can do as a parent is to provide logic behind your methods and ensure safety is taken into consideration in everything they do without going to extremes.

The danger in the Jeep does not come from accidents but from being "open to the breeze". Debris from trucks can get to them and they can throw things from the vehcile. With the top down, sunburn is something I hear of parents neglecting to think about. How about hearing? It can get awfully loud in a convertible.

For local errands, I would say let them have a ball in the Jeep. Highway and freeways, I would say top up!

For your own sanity... erase and never let pictures of your loved ones in accidents come to mind. The power os suggestion is a mighty strong thing and you want only the best for you and your familyi right?

A jeep is a safe vehicle due to its roll cage, even though it appears far less secure than a car with a roof. However, the kids sitting back there are able to throw things out of the vehicle while it is moving, and are less protected in the event of a sudden rain shower.

My recommendation is to share your concern with your ex, and point out the issue with things being thrown out of the vehicle. You can also arrange for specific special day for the kids to go riding without the roof, making it something they can earn as a treat.

If he doesn't listen, make sure the kids have some toys with them, and wait until one gets chucked out fo the jeep. Raise a stink about it and the hassle may make him concede the point. Maybe you'll get lucky and the police will see it and ticket him, really driving home the point. This would also give you a great chance to say "I told you so."

If they are properly in their carseats and belted in, there is roughly the same chance for injury in an on-road accident as a small car. They are safer in the jeep than a convertible (jeep has a rollbar. And unless the CJ-7 is a high-rider or is driven like a maniac, they are a stable vehicle. I have seen an early 2000's model in an accident and it faired very well as compared to a car.

I understand your fear, you are a mother who wants to protect her children. Life is what it is...It is fun to ride with the wind in your face and your Ex husband wants to share this with them. Talk to your Ex husband, tell him how you feel, maybe he will listen and not do it, or he will do it no matter what you say. If it is not against the law, he can legally do it, even if you protest..Hmmm?(I'm no lawyer)
It would be wrong for anyone to tell you what to say or do. It is up to the parents to work it out or the courts, since you are divorced.. I wish you and your family an awesome life together.

as previously stated, your kids are just as safe in a jeep as they are in any other vehicle on thr road as long as they are properly restrained. the roll cage is much more sturdy than other vehicles because it is designed to be an off-road vehicle.

Have somebody jam the roof so he can't put it down.
