I've always seen people walking their dog on TV and those well trained dogs keep their eyes on the person at ALL times... How do you train a dog to do that? Do they teach them by keeping treats in their hand until they learn to look at the person on their own?
Here's a video, if your /really/ dunno what I'm talking about. (It's about 2 mins into the vid.

I have and have had dogs that work like that. You and your dog have to be very in tune to each other and the dog has to like working. Keep it fun and exciting for the dog.

I have used treats with some, some not, it depends on the individual dog. You don't have to use treats to get your dog to work like that. Treats are not allowed in an obedience ring, so whether the trainer used treats or not, they have weaned away from the treats.

Get started in classes at a training school, one where they compete successfully in obedience. It does take work, and I think good training is part 'art'!

Not all breeds are as eager to please as others.

No its not treats. It trickery. You trick the dog into thinking its attached to you. How? You do leash training. You make a square 50 by 50 ft and get a leash about 25 ft long. Never look at the dog and stand there and let them wonder. Once they start to wonder
you walk to the next corner in the square. You will probably drag the dog but you cant respond to whatever they do to run. Repeat this about ten times a day. Once they start to realize that when you move so do they, then you incorporate the sit when you stop.

Treats held in the hand. A woman who volunteers with me at the HS who use to train dogs showed me how it's done. I've tried with my dog...she gets too impatient for the treat and ends up jumping on me :)

i use you tube! ok srry. the first thing that you have to do is to be able to start in a spot where you can let your dog off a leash. well first you have to have a very strong bond with your dog so when u call her, she comes, and yes for somethings like that on the video u need a treat in ur habd or ur dogll NEVER keep her eyes on you like that.lol and so u can let ur dog run off, and wen u call her name like 5 times, she finally comes.yea thats how i trained my dog.

there is a training method (at home) for that. You have a cord (or belt) around your waist. then you tie your dogs leash to your belt and go around doing what you usaully do. ignore the dog and dont say a thing to him. he will have to monitor your movement and he will also have to learn to keep an eye on u so i reccomend this method.

Treats are probably the best way to get the dog intrested. I used chopped up hot dog becuase my dog could smell it.

I traind my dog with sign language and whistling, I never yelled to it.

Training takes alot of work becuase it involves trust.

yes, its a lot of treats and praise. Some people keep the treats in their mouth so the puppy wouldn't follow the hand but look at the face of the trainer...

yeah, it's called obedience training. And not just a beginner puppy class, it's a lot of training - consistent and disciplined.
