I've got an impossible surname I'm looking up and I can only find one thing that doesn't help me in the slightest. It's a Lithuanian surname, so does anyone know where I can find Lithuanian records online?
Problems are that whatever records of him there were are probably destroyed by now, and the name might not have been his exact name. Any help?

It's doubtful that records were destroyed on him. If nothing else, his immigration records will be intact and, depending whether he arrived before 1900 or after 1900, the quality of the info in them could solve many of your problems.

The other source of excellent records are the church where he worshipped. Lithuanians can be Catholic or Orthodox on the most part (some Jews or Lutherans, but it's rare). Both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches are excellent record keepers. They can help you find all sorts of information on the family, especially from the baptismal records of chidren, marriage and death records, etc.

If you share the name you're looking for with us (and any details you do have), maybe we can help.

Since the turn of the century, immigrants coming to North America have been plagued by the fact that almost all immigration officials were uni-lingual, and any foreign sounding names were spelled out phonetically, or were transformed into something else. So the name you now have might not be your actual family name. Try listing anything that sounds remotely like your name, just on the off chance that you'll get lucky. In our family, among the cousins, there are eight different spellings of the family surnames. It does make tracing anything difficult!
However, somewhere along the line, one of your ancestors immigrated to where you live now. And immigration records are never destroyed. That might be a source for you.
Another could be the LDS genealogy records in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Mormons have one of the world's largest collections of genealogy records and most are available to the public.
Have you tried contacting the Lithuanian Bureau of Statistics? There might be a link there as well.
Good luck!

You can try the rootsweb site below to see if someone is also searching your surname. I didn't know if Lithuanian is the surname or if you had a specific name you were looking for.
There are 10 surnames of Lithuanian on the Worldconnect in rootsweb.
Lds is the Latter Day Saints, they have loads of info.
Usgenweb is a state and county search.
All these are free sites.

Dozens of people and things - my parents who died in 1975 and 1982 principally. The City in which I was born, raised and married. My friends from way back The Blitz in 1941 when we were forced to leave our damaged home and find another, with our furniture being moved by a local coal merchant on his horse-drawn cart (petrol was rationed and in short supply) My daughter and grandchildren emigrating - if I'm lucky, I get to see them once a year. All the little animals, mostly cats, which have shared my life since the 1940's.

Please try http://www.cyndislist.com/. This site has EVERYTHING genealogical. On the home webpage is a search box. Go to the top right and type Lithuania in the search box. I tried it and it seemed to pull up a lot on Lithuania. May be what you want or not. Good luck. Genealogy is hard, but rewarding.
