Because our society places little value on older people in general and older women in particular. It is even at a younger age that women lose their value than men. So women don't want to disclose their age because if they are older than mid-20's, they are already looked down on.

I'm 40 and I love it. Have no problem with telling people, probably cos I have a different attitude about it than women who want to be seen as "young". (by the way I think a lot of men do that too). I'm extremely pleased about being 40 and since every decade life just gets more interesting, I'm looking forward to finding out what the 50s and 60s (and hopefully 70s 80s and 90s!) are like.

I think it has to do with how confident a woman feels about herself. If she feels she should look a certain way and doesn't or perhaps she looks amazing for her age when compared to others and doesn't want to some-how spoil it. I know that's my mother's thinking. She doesn't look 63, doesn't tell people her age and others say she looks to be in her early to mid 50s. Some people are shocked to learn she's got a daughter (me) who's 39. So unlike my mother, I don't have a problem with it. I don't look 39, feel great and proud of both. It's a personal thing I suppose.

Not sure. Most women I know are reluctant to share their ages, but I don't mind. If someone asks me how old I am, I tell them. Maybe that will change as I get older (I'm 34) but for now I'm perfectly happy with being the age I am.

It is because we are living in a society that is riddled with "isms" Racism, sexism, and ageism. Anyone (more directed to women but men also) past their late 20's early 30's have to deal from a deficit position in this country. I believe that this is mainly due to our preoccupation with the physical (tight fannies, perky boobs, no wrinkles, etc.etc.etc.) That's a shame since the older you get (unless you are living under a rock) the more you learn and evolve....I ain't just older, I'm flat out better. (Someone who is looking 56 in the eye).

In my opinion, Insecurity or a need for privacy, depending on the person's character. I am 51 and look good for my age, so I usually don't care who knows, but there have been people who have made me uncomfortable in general, so I do not reveal too much about myself.

I can only assume it's the wanting to be young forever syndrome, since I don't particularly care who knows how old I am.
