When the clams are alive and in the water, they filter the water each day and sand can be ingested and filtered through their system. When they are caught and used for chowder, it is very important that the clams are thoroughly rinsed. It's not always possible to remove all of the sand from a clam.

Could be a small piece of shell or the clams were not cleaned completely. Happens once in a while. Don't worry just a few extra minerals.

Some parts of the clam are like that. It's sand in them. Get a more expensive brand. It will be better.

Sometimes it's a small piece of shell or the sand wasn't washed off of the clam completely.

its because the clams were not properly cleaned and that is either dirt or shell you are crunching on. If it was home made and the clams were taken care of before being eaten such as feed cornmeal that wouldn't happen

either your getting tiny pieces of shell in your chowder or the clams were not properly rinsed...either way it wont hurt you unless its shell and big enough to chip a tooth....its just not very appealing

Clams can have this quality, yes. Usually if they are not served in the shell they are cleaned though. What brand was this? I'll be sure to not buy it!
